Mountain Scene in Oils
Via Von © 2005

This piece was my own design and as seems to be customary with me, I had put the brush to paint and the paint to surface and then figured out what to do with those strokes.  lol  The mountain angles were laid in and inspired the rest of the painting which is from memory -- whether real or imagined *grin* -- of my beloved Colorado Rockies at higher elevations.  Not much grows up there but there are pockets of valleys with grassy meadows.  To me it's heaven on earth and absolutely nothing is lovelier.

The surface is a 160 lb. Watercolour paper found on clearance at Craft Warehouse for $3.00 for 10 sheets per pad.  The paint is Windsor Newton "Winton" Oils ... a first EVER experiment with oil paints.  I initially purchased the small 6 colour WN sample set and did that solely to see how the consistency was out of the tube so that when I prepped and creamed my Genesis paints I'd have something to compare it to ... hence, the spontaneous painting session -- those strokes looked good and I had to do something with them!  lol

I was rather worried about oil paints because I'm allergic to so many things and I had heard that oils have a strong aroma (that's one of the reasons the Genesis paints are so popular as they have no odor at all).  Surprisingly, the aroma wasn't horrid although I did keep a window open for air circulation the duration of this painting --less than 24 hours.

I used the Dynasty Foliage Wave brushes almost exclusively and found them a perfect match for this medium -- awesome brushes with any medium really.  :-)

I am beyond thrilled with the results of my first ever oil painting and can't wait to do more with them too!  I realize that to an experienced painter this painting doesn't look like much ... but if you could only know how I've struggled with acrylics, and how easy the Genesis and Oil paints are for me by comparison, you'd quickly appreciate my joy and astonishment with these 3 early pieces.

I had been gifted with some Grumbacher Titanium White tubes of paint and used one to augment my WN Set with my mixes for this painting.  This week I found a small 12 colour sample set of Loew Cornell Oil Paints at Michaels for a mere $4.99 -- I immediately grabbed them to augment my WN colours.  I'm in heaven as now I can mix even more pretty colours!

One of the other things I also want to note is that David bought me a portable table-top easel with storage box (another clearance for $20 at Craft Warehouse) which holds all sorts of sizes of canvases from very small to very large.  I realized quickly that having my painting UP and off of my table made a huge difference for me with this oil painting in comparison to my Genesis Roses painting.  :-)
