Good Evening Fellow painters!! Thank you for joining me here tonight.
Thanks also to Von and Dave for asking me to be a part of their adventure!!
I want to start by giving you a bit of background about SPC Inc.
SPC Inc is an acronym for SELKIRK PAINING COMPANY INCORPORATED.
It is a privately owned and operated company based in the city of Winnipeg.
Manitoba Canada.
SPC Inc is the brain child of it's owner and President " RANDY SELKIRK".
It started out as a small residential painting service.. and has grown over the last 19 yrs to
Include commercial , Industrial , residential painting services , ((Painting everything from
Hockey Helmets to movie sets)) , FAUX STORE Franchises, and a line of it's own products.
SPC Employs talented and creative people with a wide range of abilities , decorative artists ,
technical painters , Automotive painters and detailers , industrial painters , Commercial and
residential faux finishers and Muralists.
I can tell you from personal experience it is a pleasure to work and play in such a creative and
challenging atmosphere.
Fini was developed to fill a need for a glaze , that would meet the requirements of the faux
finisher but allow for stoppages in work without causing the usual problems , such as lap lines
and other irregularities. The result was the creation of FINI.. To the pleasure of it's creator ,
it had a wide range of applications for the decorative artist as well.
Traditional Glazes , where designed to extend the OPEN time of Paint , Meaning that they act as
a retarder. They also lend a bit of transparency to the paint. Allowing the painter to create
delightful layered effects , with depth and realism. They do however have some Draw backs,
they can be difficult to work with , they can dry too quick or not quick enough ,and often do not
allow the painter to continue working , resulting in down time waiting for paint or glaze to dry
before proceeding to the next step. Often Multiple colours are virtually impossible or cost
prohibitive.
For the decorative painter traditional glazes , extenders , retarders, and blending gels
are a godsend , allowing us to work with techniques that were at one time limited only to oil
paints. However they too have some draw backs. Over work them ,they get sticky , or end up
muddy. They often leave shiny spots when dry or uneven spots when varnishing. They never dry
fast enough when you need them to or slow enough when you need them to. There never seems
to be a happy medium.( pardon the pun)
Along comes FINI……it is a bit of an Oxymoron… a fast drying extender?? LOL
Fini is a wonder product for painters…how many of us have extender, blending gel , retarder,
faux Glazing medium , float medium and flo medium on our shelves?? ALL OF YOU!! DON'T
DENY IT!! One bottle of Fini replaces ALL of them! The nice thing is that the technique
doesn't change just the medium.
So here's the thing … even though the technique doesn't change you still have to get used to a new
addition to your routine.….. you put a shot glass , egg cup , baby food jar or
Dixie cup next to your
palette , pour in a cap full of FINI . This is what you dress your brush with.. NO WATER!
Keep a brush basin with clean clear water .. to CLEAN your brushes only!!
Now I want you to try something ( doesn't have to be RIGHT THIS MINUTE)…. Load a #6
Round by dipping into the FINI , draw the brush up the side of the container to remove the excess
Fini and then load with paint as usual. Proceed to do a few comma strokes. Notice anything??? The Paint FLOWS off the brush easily and
consistently. Look at the strokes. The Colour remains true and intense from the first stroke to the
5th.. No more over stroking to get the strokes ALL the same. The quality of your stroke work
improves. Now… do a few more strokes …you can… I have filled an 8.5 x 11 sheet with comma
strokes … with a single brush load. Your Paint goes soooooo much farther.
BASE COATS…. Every one of us has to do it… none of us like it… we hate the brush marks the
sanding ..etc. Fini can help improve the overall quality of you painting by assisting in leveling the
paint.. thus reducing brush marks and ridges. Simply use Fini to thin your paint before
basecoating , and to ensure that all moves smoothly moisten your brush in the Fini
as well.
You'll use less paint and have an even , smooth base coat to paint on.
How about floating…. Every beginner painter I have ever met has struggled with Floating… too
much water , not enough water. Too much paint , not enough paint etc… Here's the answer.
Dip an angular shader into the Fini.. Draw the brush up the side of the container to remove the
excess Fini, Side load as usual and work the brush back and forth to set the load.
Now…..FLOAT! What do you notice??? You can pull the float MUCH farther….The colour is
intense and the float is consistent. Also… notice that there is no line.. on the light side of the
float… no pigment has drifted away from the body of the paint . NOW .. rinse your brush in the
clean water … notice that the paint leaves the brush cleanly! ( imagine !!you won't have to
struggle to clean your brushes.)
LINE WORK…. Every one of us gets a mite cranky about line work…. The liner NEVER holds
enough paint… we get those nasty little stop and start marks…. And the colour is weak.
Thin your paint to an ink like state using a bit of FINI . load your script liner by turning the brush
( roll the handle between your fingers ) and drawing it back toward you at the same time. A well
loaded liner should look like it has paint IN it… Not ON it. Now do your line work ,tendrils ,
vines etc…. the Colour is intense , the stop n start marks are drastically reduced , and the Lines
are smoother because the paint Flows evenly off the brush.
( TIP: when doing line work try to pull the stroke the full distance in one smooth long stroke , if
you do it quickly , there are less likely to have wobbles and bobbles in them.)
I love to use Dagger brushes , rakes and other specialty brushes unfortunately they often do not
hold much paint… but when using FINI they never seem to run out. Especially if they are
properly loaded.
Using Fini instead of water allows the painter to concentrate on getting the brush loaded
instead of struggling to get the paint to the right consistency.
Combine LOADING techniques with Using FINI… try teaching a class in just that, and watch the
quality of the work of your students improve…. More importantly…. watch the self confidence
improve!!
My Students are very a familiar with my "HIGH TECH APPLICATOR" it is actually a piece of
Shop towel saturated with Fini. I use it to pick up small amounts of colour and then gently wash
( RUB) the colour onto the base coated surface in a randome fashion… to achieve some soft multi
coloured backgrounds. I use this method over textures , over paint , I I even use it to age and
antique pieces. It a great way to apply colour in thin translucent layers.
There are just so many ways to use FINI in our every day painting… so many unique ways to
create backgrounds , clouds , foliage , and other special effects with just one product. The sky is
the limit… use your imagination and a bit of ingenuity .. who knows what you may come up
with!!
You recall what I said about using the Fini … but NO WATER to paint with…here's why… your
diluting your paint…. Adding water to your paint reduces it's durability dramatically. Affecting
its ability to Bond to the surface . Now you have a weak paint and a fragile surface. By using Fini
to THIN your paint you actually retain the integrity of the paint because your adding acrylic !
Remember those nasty little lines on the light side of your floats??? Now the Pigment stays where
it's supposed to be…. In the paint!!
I encourage you to try it… you will be thrilled with the result!! If you’re a teacher … have your
students use it , and watch their faces light up when they FINALLY GET IT!! Nothing feels
better than to see a student GET IT!! That Holy hockey Pucks I did it!! Expression is worth..
well… a truck load of FINI!!
Thanks for playin in my sand box Gang I do appreciate it very much!!!
ViaVon :Tracy, are you ready for some Questions from your guests?
tracym-mb :I am ...go for it!!
ViaVon :Brenda, please post your question :-)
Brenda-OK :When adding color washes over the Texture mediums, is Fini the medium of choice and how do we use it?
tracym-mb :I use just fini.. it maintains the integrity of the colour , and allow s the paint to transluece nicely. I also use a brush a cloth or my Hi tech applicator to apply the colour it depends on the effect you want to achieve.
ViaVon :does that answer your question, Brenda?
Brenda-OK :would we use the Fini premixed if working a large piece
tracym-mb :You can certainly , but I like to work with my moistened applicator and small puddles of paint on apalette.. no waste , I always have the right amount og glaze.
Brenda-OK :thank you .............done
ViaVon :Della, you are next :-)
DellaR-FL :.. Do you not pre wet your brush with water at all? I am so used to doing that to "open" the bristles. Will there be someone at HOOT selling Fini and Final Coat?
tracym-mb :I do moisten my brush before hand , but you can do it it either water or fini...
tracym-mb :There will be several booths at HOOT that have product.
DellaR-FL :I mixed FINI and paint and basecoated and basecoated and ...etc.
BUZZ-CT :How heavy do you load your brush with Fini whendoing a double load techique....or can you add fini while blending the colors on a palette/
BUZZ-CT :Soory about that
ViaVon :Buzz, we will hold your question for just a minute. ;-)
ViaVon :Della, was your question fully answered?
DellaR-FL :I'm done for now. *)
ViaVon :Good ... Tracy can you still see Buzz's inquiry on your screen?
tracym-mb :IYep:)
ViaVon ::)
tracym-mb :I like to dip the brush in the fini, draw it up the side of the container... always seems to be just right. If it need mor I just touch the bristle to the fini and then blend on the palette
ViaVon :Buzz, did that answer your question fully?
BUZZ-CT :Yes thanx
ViaVon :Good. Barbara ... you have a question for Tracy?
BarbaraH-Ct :Yes What ratio do you use when basecoating
tracym-mb :I just thin the paint with a few drops...til I like the consistancy.. works well for me.
ViaVon :Barbara, does that answer your question?
BarbaraH-Ct :Yes Thank you this is great
ViaVon :Good. Tracy, I have a question for you. :-)
tracym-mb :shoot
ViaVon :Last week you said we could use the Final Coat mixed with paint to seal and base our piece. Does the Fini do the same thing ?
tracym-mb :You can yes , but the final coat has a higher level of polymer in it so it takes less to seal the surface
ViaVon :Ok. So which would you refer us to use for this combination seal/base?
tracym-mb :Use the Final COat for sealing and finishing , use the fini to paint.
Dpr :Buzz, please ask your question.
BUZZ-CT :Sounds lke Fini would be great to do Ompir Type antiqing have you done any
tracym-mb :I haven' .... yet but yes I think it would work very well
ViaVon :Buzz, is your question completed?
Dpr :Brenda, please ask your question.
Brenda-OK :When doing Faux Finishes on walls, is it better to work wet in wet or in layers for the multi color look?
tracym-mb :I'l use colour washing as an example, when using fini it is best to work Wet onto dry... applying the first colour to the surface in a random fashion leaving some areas blank , you then repeat the process with the next colour filling in some of the blanks
tracym-mb :continue along in this fashion until the entire wall is covered.... this technique creates incredible depth and a light airy appearance
Brenda-OK :How do you avoid the lap lines when doing a large project like a wall?
tracym-mb :. Because you are working with a thin TRANSPARENT glaze , you make the lap lines work for you.. in fact , your trying to make lap lines lol
Brenda-OK :Oh, how so?
tracym-mb :tit' those lap lines that create the effect
tracym-mb :when working with fini for a wall application the ratio of paint to glaze is about 1 tspn to 16 oz
tracym-mb :The colour is added directly to the glaze and applied with a clean soft cloth
tracym-mb :because it dries so quickly it alows you to continue working
tracym-mb :I have colour washed a room in two hours
Brenda-OK :Thank you Tracy! ;)
tracym-mb :Your very welcome
ViaVon :Jan, you may ask your question now.
Jan-KS :Brenda kinda asked the same but will ask any way! When say sponging a LARGE wall do you put on the fini and then sponge and soften the colors in? or do you mix the fini in the colors, and what ratio?
tracym-mb :Good question!! When sponging I thin the [paint to an Ink like state with the fini.. and also moisten the sponge then start applying the colour.
ViaVon :Jan, does that answer your question?
tracym-mb :It makes the end result very soft and not so hard edged
Cherlene :Thank You! This product sounds too good to be true . . got to get some right away. Is there a web site to get more info?
tracym-mb :Any time you need info just email SPC we'l be happy to help you!

ViaVon :Does anyone else have a question for Tracy?
ViaVon :Oh wait -- I do! lol
DellaR-FL ::)
ViaVon :Tracy -- when I'm painting and using my little cup ful to work with ... how often should I reload the brush?
ViaVon :I keep getting paint colour in it. :-(
ViaVon :I mean the paint comes off the brush and goes into the fresh mix of Fini
tracym-mb :I rinse my brush frequently in water blot then reload .. I find this helps 1 keep my loading consistant ,2 my brushes stay cleaner , and I never have a bad float!!
ViaVon :ok so inbetween reloads you water wash the brush then. *duh on me* lol
Candy-Ok :Please tell me we're not close to being done with this chat!!! So much more I want to learn. I've learned alot from Brenda, I work for this GREAT lady

ViaVon :each seminar has it's own archive page with handouts, literature, gifts and transcript all contained on it
tracym-mb :You are amazing...... I' doing well if I can get my files moved from one palce to another
