viavon :OUR GUEST SPEAKER THIS EVENING IS TRACY MOREAU, SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR FROM SPC. INC.
MarilynOnt :hello, just got here in time.
viavon :**handing over microphone to Tracy Moreau**
Good Evening Fellow painters!! Thank you for joining me here tonight.
Thanks also to Von and Dave for asking me to be a part of their adventure!!
I want to start by giving you a bit of background about SPC Inc.
SPC Inc is an acronym for SELKIRK PAINTING COMPANY INCORPORATED.
It is a privately owned and operated company based in the city of Winnipeg. Manitoba Canada.
SPC Inc is the brain child of it's owner and President " RANDY SELKIRK". (from this point on to be referred to as …THE CHIEF.)
It started out as a small residential painting service.. and has grown over the last 19 yrs to Include commercial , Industrial , residential painting services,
(Painting everything from Hockey Helmets to movie sets), FAUX STORE Franchises, and a line of it's own products.
SPC Employs talented and creative people with a wide range of abilities , decorative artists , technical painters , Automotive painters and detailers , industrial painters , Commercial , Industrial and residential faux finishers and Muralists.
I can tell you from personal experience it is a pleasure to work and play in such a creative and challenging atmosphere.
Final Coat was actually one of two products invented and developed by The chief to fill a need A need for a product that could serve a wide range of Industrial and commercial applications while keeping man hours to a minimum and material cost low.
Several years ago , SPC was contracted to do a huge Restoration job for a heritage building in down town Winnipeg.
The job required the cleaning , and refinishing of miles of exquisite old wood paneling and trim Work. The Challenge?? How to complete this with a minimum of man hours , while retaining the integrity of the original finish and still provide a High quality end result.
There was absolutely nothing on the market that would do what was required with out stripping and refinishing the entire surface and costing a fortune in man power and materials.
Necessity being the mother of invention… the Chief put his considerable knowledge of Paint and paint products to use and created two wonderful products FINAL COAT and FINI.
The chief believed then and does now that if your going to make a product to do the same job as something already available , then it can't just be easier.. it has to be better! It has to do everything that the other products do and more.
We have all used traditional varnishes…. Have tried them all looking for that perfect finish… We have suffered through the long drying times , the sanding , the struggles with bubbles , brush marks , fogging , and irregular finishes. We have all had pieces ruined by yellowing , peeling , and blistering varnish. We have all been supremely annoyed by the promises of a BEAUTIFUL FINISH… only to end up with mediocre at best!!! And we have all put up with the odors and toxic fumes of spray varnishes and sealers just to avoid all of the problems I listed above only to discover a whole new set!! Not to mention the wasted varnish , the shelf full of products we won't use again decorating our studios and paint rooms.
If you totaled it all up … think of the Wood you could have bought!!!
FINAL COAT … what is it?? and what makes this stuff so special???
In a single sentence….. Final Coat is a water based , tintable, wipe on Finishing product , that dries in 3 to 5 minutes .
It Can be applied over any existing finish , with out cracking blistering or peeling , it has no ambering qualities what so ever and can be used for interior or exterior applications.
It is an acrylic , but can be used over oils , acrylics , water colours even Genesis Heat set Oils.
It will adhere to virtually anything…glass , plastic , metal , vinyl , or wood…candles even fabric.
Final coat is unique in this industry , in that it uses a Polymer as opposed to Resins like tradition Varnishes. We have all seen the sludge at the bottom of our varnish Bottles… that sludge is the deglossers and the resins that settle when your varnish sits for any length of time. To remix them , you have to shake it well.. and then you end up with bubbles…. You can't win. (Sigh)
Final Coat doesn't separate .. so it can sit on the shelf indefinitely. These polymers also give Final coat its unique ability to flex… it is simply amazing on floor cloths… you can apply 10 , 20 coats of varnish to a floor cloth and still be able to roll it up with out cracking.
Ever accidentally FREEZE your varnish ?? Remember what happened to it??
You can freeze Final Coat solid.. thaw it out and use it… with no ill effects what so ever! Making final coat a dream to ship during the winter months.
Our recommended application is with the cloth or applicator , it is the most economical and certainly the easiest! But you are not obligated to just that method .You can apply it with a brush if you like , you can even apply it with an Airbrush , it atomizes beautifully!!
Final Coat is more than just a varnish, it has a range of uses and can be used with a huge variety of surfaces and products making it extremely versatile .You will find that it will replace a number of products in your paint box.
Final Coat makes a very nice sealer for things like MDF… we have all tried sealing MDF with Varnish or with all purpose sealers…. OH MY!! Brush stroke city!!
And THEN the Pebbling!!!
Two or three quick coats of Final Coat over MDF leaves you with a well sealed and beautifully smooth surface to paint on!!
How about candles …..Prep the candle first with your usual method Then wipe on two or three coats of final coat over the entire surface .
once it's dry …go ahead and paint as usual. Once your painting is done.. tap a coat over your artwork ,allow it to dry then apply several coats over the whole thing ( except the wick area.) Yes the candle is safe to burn .. the finish will just slough off with the paint as the candle melts.
For antiqiung… a terrific antiquing medium… Tinted with ANY colour of acrylic paint.. Final Coat is a wonderful way to achieve a fine aged look with out working like a demon to remove a medium that is drying too quick…. Aging with thin layers of colour gives your piece an air of authenticity, as if the patina had merely occurred over time.
HOW about staining….Imaging making a stain that was true to the colour you select… Imagine making an Alizeron Crimson stain… and your wood piece ends up being a bold rich Crimson., while allowing the beauty of the wood grain to show through …Brilliant bold colours of stain any colour you desire, in any tone you desire … The control you have is remarkable. And the possibilities are endless!!
This is just a few of the things you can do with ONE product , and items you already have in your paint box.
MONEY!! We usually have some , never seem to have enough , and for something that is so easy to use it's not always easy to make. Final Coat is somewhat higher in price than most acrylic varnishes on the market…so how can it save me money??? Final Coat is less expensive to use than traditonal finishing products…. How so you ask???? SPREAD RATE!!!
Your everyday 8 oz bottle of varnish ( approx $7- $8) will cover roughly 25 to 40 sq ft in a single coat, take away the varnish you wash down the drain when you clean your brush , and the bit that never comes out of the bottle and the rest of the bottle that stayed on the shelf after the first use because it just didn't cut it , and your varnish actually only covered about 15 to 25 q ft..
Cost is now .30 cents sqft
8oz of Final Coat ( $9 and up )….. covers roughly 750 sq ft in a single coat You never wash it down the drain because you keep you applicator in a zip lock bag so it doesn't dry out, because of it's milk like consistency, you can use every last drop of it… and it never sits on the shelf because you will use it on EVERYTHING you can think of… including pieces you finished ages ago and just wanna freshen em up , the dining room table and the scruffy cabinet doors in the kitchen.
Cost per sq ft is 0.012 cents .
Final Coat can go nearly 30 times farther than traditonal varnish.
It will also save you Time… You can reapply in minutes instead of hours and little or no sanding is required between coats.. (( I personally just use a bit of Brown paper between coats to ensure a smooth even finish.)) Spend your time PAINTING instead of Varnishing.!!!
You're painters for heavens sake !!!
What makes FINAL COAT so special is that It does everything we need it to do , does it faster , easier , with none of the problems associated with tradition Finishing products. AND you can do more with it!!
I can drone on and on about the different applications of this product…. And believe me there is much more .
Please feel free to ask any questions you can think of…… I can answer some technical questions too if you have em. If for what ever reason I can't answer a question , I will be very glad to get the answers from our Mad Scientist and pass them on to you via email or by phone as long as you provide me with the contact information.
I do appreciate your taking the time to read what I have had to say.
I hope it has provided you with some additional knowledge and hopefully fueled your imagination as well.
My thanks to Von and Dave (wink wink wink ) for asking me to take part in such a terrific event.
I look forward to doing it again next week. FINI !! We're gonna talk about FINI!!
I CAN"T WAIT!!
Thank you all for playing in my sand Box.
The Interactive Question & Answer Section follows now:
viavon :OK, we have a few individuals already in queue
MarilynOnt :can I use it for glazing?
MarilynOnt :sorry
tracym-mb :Yes you can certainly use it for glazing techniques
SusanB-CA :I have a question
viavon :One moment please
viavon :Brenda-OK has a question. Susan, we've put you in queue. :-)
DianeN-FL :I have a question too Von
Brenda-OK :Hi Tracy, thanks for such a wonderful presentation, I was wondering
tracym-mb :yes???
Brenda-OK :will Final coat go in to distribution to the chain stores
tracym-mb :No ... SPC believes in a grass roots method... and as a small company believes in suporting small companies
Brenda-OK :thank you!
Brenda-OK :Mary-Can go ahead please
Mary-Can :First let me thank you for a great job! My question is about Mdf and sealing
Mary-Can :If you sela mf with final coat will it swell if it gets wet? especially if it is outside?
tracym-mb :There are always rule to follow when sealing something like MDF.. when using Final Coat for the final seal.. be sure that you double the coats ( I like a min of 6) and cover the entire surface.
tracym-mb :If Moisture can get in... it can cause swelling
Mary-Can :thanks...
viavon :PatK-SD you may post your question now. :-D
PatK-SD :Love this Seminar -- Have 2 questions #1 Wax over Final Coat?? #2 Ratio of FC to paint for antiquing or staining?
tracym-mb :For antiquing I pour off two OZ of FC and then add a few (4 or 5) drops of paint.. for staingi I mix it stronger 8-10 drops
tracym-mb :Wax over FC bees wax is just beatiful... but I do recommend a light sanding with 400 grit sand paper before applying the wax.
Diana :?
tracym-mb :The sanding give the varnish a bit of tooth.. lets the wax grab the surface..
MarilynOnt :1 comment, 2 ?s please
viavon :Marilyn, we'll add you to queue. Thank you :-)
viavon :SusanB-CA you may ask your question
SusanB-CA :This information is excellent. Thank you very much for sharing it with us. Is there a way that we can get a transcript of this chat to keep in our files and share with others?
viavon :Yes, it will be available on our website tomorrow
Brenda-OK :SharonNZ post your question please
SharonNZ :*bird* When is final coat coming to New Zealand
DianeN-FL :Von?
tracym-mb :We are just know working in conjuction with a new distributor in Austrailia... they are working on Distribution to NZ as well
SharonNZ :okay thank you
tracym-mb :I can give you the contact info if you like.... I am sure they will be very happy to helpp you.
SharonNZ :yes please
viavon :DianeN-FL you may ask your question now. :-D
tracym-mb :you can reach me at SPC@mts.net
DianeN-FL :If I have a small amount poured to use and have too much can I put it back if no color has been added
tracym-mb :Absolutely!!
Brenda-OK :Della post your question please
DianeN-FL :Oh good and can it be applied to paint on mirror and leave no filming look anywhere
DellaR-FL :Can you use it on glass and ceramics and then paint on them? Can it be used as "prep" for pen and ink instead of a spray? Will you have another of these on FINI?
DianeN-FL :Sorry
Brenda-OK :sorry
viavon :lol ... Della we'll hold your question for just a second then.
viavon :LOL
DellaR-FL :OK
viavon :well, maybe a minute instead. *grin*
tracym-mb :It dries crystal clear over glass , but it it jsut for decorative purposes only.... I would also like to point one thing out .. in regard to painting on Glass . If you are using acrylic paints an s sealers . Do not use Windex or Ammonia base cleaners... Ad
DianeN-FL :Thank you Tracey
tracym-mb :These cleansers destroy acrylic .. they act like acided and breakl down the paints ability to bond to surfaces
tracym-mb :Now in ref to using it as a prep for pen and ink.... yes you can just be sure to *TAP* it on over the ink....and hat the Ink in completely dry
viavon :Yes, Della -- Fini Seminar is next Friday. LOL
DellaR-FL :Also, Will you ever make a spray Final Coat?
tracym-mb :not in the forseeable future.. however .. You can shoot FC through an airbrush.. if you are looking for that kind of finish.
Brenda-OK :Peni ask your question please
Peni-P-OR :Can you apply other finishes over Final Coat such as wax or spray varnishes ,oil based antiquing ?Great job Tracy!!!
tracym-mb :You can indeed ... FC contains no silicone , so it doesn' react unfavorabley to other finishing products.
Peni-P-OR :Wonderful Had a student call me today who had used FC and ran out and is a pinch.. LOL
tracym-mb :Just tell her it has to be dry!!
tracym-mb :lol
viavon :MarilynOnt -- you may post your question now.
MarilynOnt :I used the FC for the 1st time on a commissioned piece, the piece was a fete de la resistance and then I was hooked, thank you for your presentation, when selling to customers I like to know origins of product...#1? what is recipe for glazing 2)
Peni-P-OR :I did just that and told her to test a small area..
MarilynOnt :#2) "tap on ink " project - please explain....3) floor wax can be used instead of beeswax.....????
MarilynOnt :finished askg ?'s
tracym-mb :For glazing I use FC Straignt out of the Bottle and I prefer the LOW GLOSS for that ... I gently Brush a bit over the area I want to glaze let it set and then continue
tracym-mb :TApping on .. I gently tap by dabbing the FC over the inked area ( it prevents smudging when your too impatient to wait!!);)
MarilynOnt :tapping with a brush, cloth...?
tracym-mb :with a cloth or applicator
tracym-mb :One of the most beatuful finishes I have ever seen using a wax was done with Floor wax and a small amount of Burnt Umber Oil Paint.. easy and very rich
tracym-mb :and the FC takes it like a dream
MarilynOnt :oils, acrylics, wax , Final coat ......alll on the same project......my my ...goes against our lessons in ptg.....Im impressed!
tracym-mb :LOL... I know... Final Coat is very very versatile
viavon :Ok, if we're ready for the next one ... Susan B-CA has another question for us
MarilynOnt :thank you Tracy for all your info....very informative and no more ?s
SusanB-CA :In general, how many coats of Final Coat would you recommend to give a great finish on a high-quality wood project (not primitive...but more of a Victorian style?)
viavon :ars ok?
tracym-mb :If you want a rich DEEP Finish ... I like to use a minimum of 6 coats. and if youever want to give it a fresh up.. a simple wipe is all it takes
SusanB-CA :Thank you!
viavon :Patk-SD has another question for you Tracy :-)
PatK-SD :Thanks -- Do you use FC as a sealer for wood also? If so, how many coats.
tracym-mb :I do indeed .... I usually use three if the wood is soft like bass wood , give it a light sand and then give it three more.
PatK-SD :Great - I'll try that. How many coats forf exterior use?
DellaR-FL :Can you use it on glass and ceramics? Would I have to etch a plate to do or could I FC it instead?
tracym-mb :If you use 4 for inside make it 8 for outside .. double it up is the rule of thumb.. and be sure the ENTIRE surface is covered
DellaR-FL :Apologies! Didn't mean to send out of turn.
viavon :you're ok Della. :-)
tracym-mb :Della ... I would etch... Glass is very slick so it you want to be able to wash the surface it would be best to etch... if it is purely decorative .. the FC will work fine..
viavon :Della, did that answer your question?
tracym-mb :On ceramics.. unglazed Bisque is is a wonderful surface and FC is a perfect prep for it... the Low gloss is the perfect finishing coat as it leaves you with a lovely matt finish . maintaining the beauty of the raw bisque
DellaR-FL :Yes. Thank you.
viavon :Good. :-) SusanB-Ca I believe you have another question for Tracy?
SusanB-CA :I may have missed this earlier. Is FinalCoat non-toxic?
tracym-mb :Yes it is.. non toxic and water based .. it isn' even regulated under WHIMIS..
viavon :flammable is another concern
tracym-mb :Non Flammable .. can' even set it on fire
tracym-mb :CAN"
tracym-mb :CAN'
tracym-mb :cant
tracym-mb :LOL oh my
viavon :LOL Tracy! lol Susan -- you have 2 questions I believe?
DellaR-FL ::D
SusanB-CA :When used as wood sealer, does Final Coat actually sink into the surface to keep elements within the wood from bleeding through?
SusanB-CA :Or does it just sit on the top of the wood as varnish does?
MarilynOnt :another ? on this topic sealing
tracym-mb :A good portion of the FC is absorbed by the wood .But it dries so quickly that it doesn' allow the grain as much time to swell , thus reducing the sanding.
tracym-mb :So it seals the surface below the actual surface
SusanB-CA :Would this keep pitch from bleeding through, then?
DianeN-FL :Another? unglazed ceramics
tracym-mb :I have never seen the tanins leach through any project I have sealed with FC.
viavon :Brenda, you have a question, I believe?
Brenda-OK :If I want a finish that's not quite semi-gloss but not really matte, what do you suggest?
tracym-mb :hehehe.. I mix low gloss with FC 50 / 50
Brenda-OK :thank you, that's what I've been doing too
viavon :DebQC I believe you have a question for Tracy?
Deb-QC :can you use this on dishes that food will be on (or glasses) or served from?
tracym-mb :Glasses would be for decorative purposes only but food plates for cookies and such .. NO PROBLEM ...!!
Deb-QC :thanks, tracy
MarilynOnt :? for you......I really need to get this through my head.....I can use FC as a sealer and a finisher without concern for mixing with brand name paints
MarilynOnt :???? really, ????
viavon :Let's wait a minute for more inquiries, ok?
viavon :We've got several people in line who've been very patient.
tracym-mb :exactly ... I am a paint collector from way back .. JS , Americanas, deltas, you name a brand I own it and I use em all.. if it is water bases
viavon :Tracy, could you take a minute and finish on DebQC's question.... and explain why it's ok for plates but not for glasses, please?
tracym-mb :It' fine to MIX with Final Coat. If you are working OVER paint.. oils , acrylics , heat sets and water soluable ils are all fine
tracym-mb :Sorry .. about the Glasses.... Glass is slick and the finish would eventually wash off.. for the plates it would be bonding to another acrylic or to the woor so it would be stable
tracym-mb :either way it isn't toxic or harmful
viavon :Ok! Thanks Tracy. Next our DianeN has another question and after that, Diana will follow
DianeN-FL :Unglazed Bisque of course ceramics are so porus does it then take more final coat or does FC lay on top mostly
tracym-mb :the first coat would mostly be absorbed and seal the surface the remaing coats would bond to the surface
DianeN-FL :Are you talking to me Tracy?
tracym-mb :Yes .. lol.. I am sorry I should have mentioned the bisque in there
DianeN-FL :More than one coat required then? Thank you
tracym-mb :Yes I like three on bisque
DianeN-FL :Got it thank you so much great presentation so helpful
viavon :Diana ... you're welcome to post
Diana :This seminar is excellent! I too, wondered if it would be available in text, Thankyou! My Question? What did you mean my "ambering qualities" that you mentioned at the beginning? Does that mean it gets cloudy?
viavon :OH! I believe that was a typo in there -- Tracy meant "no ambering qualities" ... meaning it does not yellow.
Diana :OH, I thought maybe... it refers to yellowing then, that makes more sence.. thankyou.
viavon :Am I correct in that, Tracy?
tracym-mb :Thank you von .. thats exactly what it means ... Final Coat doesn' yellow.. Traditional varnish contain chemicals that cause AMBERING or yellowing
Diana :Amber /Yellow, duh!
tracym-mb :I do apolgize for the confusion
viavon :Diana, this seminar will be available tomorrow in full archive. Check the Class room for location
Diana :Thanks, I'll go back to reading now
viavon :lol
viavon :Susan B -- you're next!
SusanB-CA :Am I correct to assume that you wouldn't mix equal parts of Final Coat and acrylic paint to basecoat and seal wood in one step? Thanks for your great answers to our questions!
tracym-mb :Sure you can!!
tracym-mb :neat Idea...and a clever time saver
SusanB-CA :That's great. I thought Final Coat was just for going on top of dried paint!
viavon :If I had an emoticon for a face falling on the floor, I'd use it. LOL
DellaR-FL :;)
viavon :Marilyn-Ont you're up next!
tracym-mb :*)
MarilynOnt :ok so Tracy you say .....FC can be used for everything by the sounds of it.......
MarilynOnt :right
tracym-mb :pretty much lol
tracym-mb :tho it makes a lousey salad dressing
Diana :Is it sold by the gallon?
MarilynOnt :with almost any other brand name product right?
tracym-mb :FC is compatible with almost any brand... I say almost cause I haven' tested em alll... but close ;)
MarilynOnt :so , if that's the case maybe it would be easier to appreciate the great value to say what IT DOESN'T DO, 'cause it sounds like a "doesn't do
MarilynOnt :list would be minimal
tracym-mb :LOL.. I think you would be right
MarilynOnt :anything particular to do to block knots in wood? or just basecoat the project including
tracym-mb :I apply severl coats just to the knots first .. then give the whole piece a few
tracym-mb :coats
MarilynOnt :the knots with the FC and not worry about knots surfacing through the completed varnished piece
tracym-mb :Like I said .. I have never had tannins leach through any project I have ever sealed with FC
viavon :did that answer your questions, Marilyn?
MarilynOnt :so much for that o
MarilynOnt :other product out there used just to block knots......wow, great product this FC
MarilynOnt :thanks Im finished
viavon :ok then ... Della, you're up next!
DellaR-FL :I am a Genesis teacher and it is wonderful over and under. It is not effected by the heat at all!
tracym-mb :I paint with Genesis too... I love my FC over and under
DellaR-FL ::D
viavon :Peni, you have a question?
Peni-P-OR :I have a student who is painting a very large portrait in Genesis do you have suggestion on how to use final caot over top so it doesn't have any glare.
viavon :**listening for the words "low gloss matte FC" ** lol
tracym-mb :Use the Low GLoss.....and just two or three coats.
Peni-P-OR :ok thank you
viavon :Peni -- i have some if you need :-)
viavon :Deb-QC you're next!
Deb-QC :if you etch or carve on glass then paint and then use FC would it still come off from washing?
tracym-mb :The Genesis is a very stable [aint .. for it doesn' need alot of Varnish to protect it.. we painters just like the JUMP the colours make when we hit it with a coat or two of varnish ;)
Peni-P-OR :Ok thanks I'm out,!!
tracym-mb :Yes it will... eventually.. the etching gives the FC a better surface to Bond to... it will with stand the moisture if the ENTIRE surface is sealed
DellaR-FL :Or a lot of coats and it looks like it is under glass!
viavon :Ok ... now I need to mention a couple of very important items here a minute
viavon :May I have your attention for just a moment, please?
tracym-mb :I am all ears

Brenda-OK :Night Marilyn
viavon :byebye Marilyn -- thank you so much for coming!!!
tracym-mb :yes Marilyn??
MarilynOnt :Tracy .....can we buy wholesale direct from SPC
tracym-mb :If you are a Retailer yes.. but if you have the distributor in your area it will likely be less expensive for you to buy from them./
MarilynOnt :&the one thing that will really push this product is the fact that it won't freeze
MarilynOnt :with our winters....that is a big problem in the winter for buying stock
Peni-P-OR :Brenda you know the canvas I was speaking of? well why I asked the question is most of the canvas was done in acrylic , just the finishing touch have ben done with Genesis .So we are dealing with flat and a paint that has a finish. So need to even them o
tracym-mb :Oh it'l freeze... it just wont hurt it
MarilynOnt :ok, I'll continue to buy from my disstributor.....yes it will freeze ....won't hurt it......big selling point
viavon :Peni -- i have an opened bottle of the matte for you to use if you don't want to invest in a bottle just for that project
Peni-P-OR :out with a final finish that will make both product have same finish!! Was that clear as mud
MarilynOnt :thank you once again.....see ya next week night all
Brenda-OK :That won't be a problem with the Final Coat Peni, just use the Low-Gloss and it will take care of any sheen you don't want
viavon :byebye Marilyn!! Thanks for coming!
MarilynOnt :better make a spray quickly though
MarilynOnt :goodnite
Peni-P-OR :Ok thanks..Brenda
