ViaVon :Wow that's a lot of teaching! :-) Do you teach the canvas and burlap or all surfaces?
BUZZ-CT :all surfaces....the burlap is a pet experiment at the present time
ViaVon :Your pet experiment is looking like it's a seasoned pro in my eye. I love what you do with it.
BUZZ-CT :i used to have a permanent class room at the local art league but had to give it up with my wife's health
ViaVon :I love seeing different things. Out of the norm -- makes it so fun and interesting
BUZZ-CT :true....Betsy edwards has two of my burlap plaques....ask her about them
ViaVon :Yes, I understand the health issues. Mama has had some pretty severe health issues in recent years. Daddy is her caretaker.

BUZZ-CT :Brenda or Lynda have a pictire of me taken in Indianapolis
ViaVon :well I will have to beg for a side view of it then!
BUZZ-CT :betsy...have to tell you ...the Soft grips are becoming a bit hit
betsyh_-_NH :SUPER!
ViaVon :and one can't beat the price!
BUZZ-CT :very true
betsyh_-_NH :I like them - but then I'm prejudiced
ViaVon :even the Aqualons are worth the extra in my opinion.
ViaVon :Hi Sharon!!
Dpr :Welcome, Sharon
Sharon....ON :Hi Everyone
BUZZ-CT :A.C. Moore is running thise groupings for $10,00 that figures to $1,50 a brush
ViaVon :Betsy, we usually give everyone about 10 minutes past to find their way and straggle in. :-)
betsyh_-_NH :ok
ViaVon :Buzz -- Michaels has sales like that on all individual brush stock -- just incredible value!
ViaVon :Hi Diane!!
Dpr :Hi Diane
DianeN-FL :Hi everybody
BUZZ-CT :Yeah bu that kind of hurts the small ndependent dealer
ViaVon :Do the small independents carry the line, Betsy?
betsyh_-_NH :some do
ViaVon :I know we carry the kits
ViaVon :HI Dorcas!!!
Dpr :Hi Dorcas
betsyh_-_NH :There are a number of distributors that stock Royal products to sell to independenta
Dorcas-NL :Hi Von and everybody
Dorcas-NL :Sharon - is dat you or another Sharon
ViaVon :Betsy -- I didn't know that! I have an account direct with Royal so I never checked elsewhere for distribution.
BUZZ-CT :betsy...I still lke the aqua-lon line
betsyh_-_NH :Catalina Cottage (on your coast) carries Royal
betsyh_-_NH :Buzz - Aqualon is my favorite!
ViaVon :mine too!
ViaVon :We'll give it another three minutes and then get the Seminar off and rolling. :-)
Dorcas-NL :hmmm! must be something, I only have two aqualon brushes and they are my favourite brushes
BUZZ-CT :had a gal tell me the other night that the soft-grips are just right for her artritic hands
Dorcas-NL :I have rounds and use them as flats lots of times
betsyh_-_NH :although - I LOVE the natural fitch deerfoot in the Soft-Grip line and the large goat hair mops
ViaVon :Dorcas you need more. and more. and more! lol
ViaVon :ohhhhhhh me tooooooo Betsy! The Fitch Deerfoot in all sizes are awesome -- I use them for all of my character shelves all the time
DianeN-FL :I just bet I'm gonna learn more about that brush tonight.
Dorcas-NL :Yep, gonna get a whole bunch real soon. The ones I have are acrylic handles and I love that cause I'm terrible for leaving my painting table and end up with my brushes sitting in the water
ViaVon :lol Diane! You'll need them. You'll want them. You'll have to add them to the 10,000 other brushes you already have! lol
BUZZ-CT :i just purchase the deerfoots....haven't tried them yet
ViaVon :You will really like them, Buzz. They have a unique texture that I've not found elsewhere.
BUZZ-CT :But the combs are great
DianeN-FL :Deerfoot is that the flat with middle cut out ? LOL
ViaVon :Diane -- ummmm nope. I can't think what that one is called either! Reminds me of the calligraphy brushes that Ken uses though! lol
betsyh_-_NH :no, it's shaped like a deer's hoof
Sharon....ON :? ? how do you know what size brush the agualon are, the printing came off of both my brushes I have.
ViaVon :The one's that Diane described I mean.
betsyh_-_NH :full bristles, round, with a flat top cut on an angle
ViaVon :Mine too Sharon. lol That's a good question for our Seminar Q&A.
ViaVon :Hi Lillian!
Sharon....ON :oh ok
Dpr :Welcome, Lillian
Lillian_M-On. :Hi Everybody
ViaVon :*welcome*
DianeN-FL :I've not pick up a deer's foot to look at it I really don't know I'll have to search a picture

THE SEMINAR BEGINS!

ViaVon :Please remember to put yourself into queue for any questions you may have by asking DPR, aka David
ViaVon :I'll be helping Betsy with her presentation so during that, please be sure to queue yourself with David. :-)
ViaVon :And without further ado ... onto Betsy's presentation!

Hi & Good Evening - to everyone.

Von & David, thanks for inviting me to be here, and thanks to all of you for taking time to “listen” to me.

I’d like to start by giving you a bit of information about Royal & Langnickel Brush Manufacturing Co.

Royal is located in Merrillville, IN - just outside of Chicago, IL. It is a family owned business. There is also a UK office in The Dovellos brothers, George, Bill & Gus, are the owners and hands-on operators of the company. George’s son, Dino, is also actively involved in day-to-day operations.

The company started as a sponge importer and has developed into one of the largest brush companies in the U.S. Yes, they still import and sell sponges, but a vast array of other artist supplies has been added. Several years ago, Royal purchased the well-respected Langnickle Brush Co. and added those high quality products to its line.

The Dovellos family is dedicated to bringing you quality products at a reasonable price - AND … they stand behind their products. If you ever have a problem with a Royal Brush product, just let them know, and it will be taken care of.

Now, let’s talk about brushes.

Recently a new line of brushes was introduced: Soft-Grip.

Royal Soft-Grip brushes are ergonomically designed with thick acrylic handles and a soft, no slip, rubber grip. This makes holding a brush much more comfortable than when using other brushes - especially for those of us with arthritis or carpel tunnel syndrome.

There are 144 different brush heads in 6 different hair categories. You can identify the various brush (hair) types by the color-coded handles. The blue tip is Golden Taklon. Yellow is white Taklon. Assorted natural bristle brushes have green tips. Brushes with a combination of natural and synthetic hairs (Combo) have orange tips. Pure red sable brushes have teal tips. Rosy red tips are on brushes that have a variety of other natural hair types.

How often have you wondered which brush you should use for a specific project? There are so many - how do you choose? Which hairs are better - natural or synthetic?

Generally speaking, synthetic brushes (like those made of Golden Taklon) will take more abuse than most natural hair brushes. However, there are some times that you’ll want to use the natural hairs. For instance, the natural fitch deerfoot stippler is my favorite for creating texture on a snowman or teddy bear - anywhere you want a light, fluffy look.

White Taklon is good for fabric painting and for using with acrylic enamels. Pure red sable has superior spring and is great for painting on glass and glazed ceramics. Stiff hog bristle brushes are best for high viscosity paints (tube color) when you want to show brushstrokes and texture in the paint.

There are flats, shaders, angulars, rounds, liners, filberts, combs, daggers, mops, wash brushes and more - a shape for every purpose. AND …. The best part is that every brush (no matter what size or hair type) is just $2.99. At this price, you can afford to try different shapes, sizes and hairs!

Royal has not forgotten our future artists (and future leaders). Big Kid’s Choice brushes were designed especially for children (I think they’re great for any beginner). These brushes have shorter, brightly colored translucent acrylic handles and dyed-to-match Taklon heads. Again, color-coding is the key: all liners are blue, rounds are green, flat shaders are red, angulars are orange, filberts are yellow and specialty brushes (combs, fans, stipplers, etc.) are purple. Big Kid’s Choice brushes are available singly and in sets. Each brush is only $1.99, and sets are $4.99 or $8.99 depending on the number of brushes in the set.

For the serious painter, Royal offers three (equal in quality) lines: Aqualon, Majestic and Fusion. All 3 have molded acrylic handles - no worry of paint chipping and cracking as the handle expands (and contracts) in water. All three have brush heads made from the highest quality Taklon.

Why three different lines? Just as each of us prefers a particular pen - one that is best suited to our individual handwriting - different types of brush heads appeal to each of us: “Different strokes for different folks”!

My personal favorite is the Aqualon. It is the workhorse brush in my studio. It stands up to abuse and performs beautifully. It has a clear acrylic handle and Taklon hairs of medium resistance.

The Majestic is the softest of the three. It has a beautiful Black handle and black nickel ferrule. The brush heads are made from 3 different diameters of synthetic hair. Louise Jackson, MDA, prefers the Majestic for her beautiful watercolor paintings. A version of the Majestic (with an added rubber “relief grip”) is used by Ann Kingslan, MDA, and her daughter Mary Gililisco, CDA. The “Fabulous Filbert” and “Magnigicent Mop” brushes are manufactured to their specific requirements.

The Fusion has an opaque gold handle, and its hairs are dyed for a variegated appearance (I think it looks a lot like badger hair). These hairs are slightly thicker and stiffer than most synthetic filaments and carry more, heavier paint than most other synthetic brushes - they are perfect for higher viscosity paints.

I could go on and on, however, I think I’ll stop now and open this up for questions and comments.

Before I do - to those of you who are teachers/designers - please consider becoming one of Royal’s Supporting Artists. Contact Jasmin Chacon at Royal for information. jasmin@royalbrush.com or by phone 1-800-247-2211

ViaVon :*applause*
ViaVon :Thank you Betsy!
betsyh_-_NH :thank you!
ViaVon :Sharon had an excellent question before the presentation .
ViaVon :Sharon, the brushes you mentioned, are those Aqualons that had lost their labeling of sizes?
betsyh_-_NH :yes, she wanted to know how to tell the size of her Aqualon brushes
Sharon....ON :Yes the printing came off of the brushes
betsyh_-_NH :just rub a bit of a dark color of paint over the area that used to have print - wiola! you'll be able to read it again
Sharon....ON :oh ok thanks
DianeN-FL :Ah like antique it LOL
betsyh_-_NH :you're welcome
Dpr :Dorcas, please ask your question.
betsyh_-_NH :right, Diane
Dorcas-NL :Thank you, I would like to know what is the biggest difference in the aqualon and the fusion line
betsyh_-_NH :the resistance of the bristles
Dorcas-NL :thank you
betsyh_-_NH :the Fusion is stiffer
ViaVon :how does that impact the stroke work, Betsy?
betsyh_-_NH :Well, it's a matter of personal preference - I prefer the Aqualon because it's softer (but not too soft)
Dpr :Diane, please ask your question.
betsyh_-_NH :for me, the Fusion is too stiff for stroke work
DianeN-FL :My question is about the new ergo handles versus the aqualon how do they compare
betsyh_-_NH :hmmmm - well the Soft-Grip has the rubber grip that cushions
DianeN-FL :Sorry Betsy I meant compare in bristle
betsyh_-_NH :that's especially helpful when you paint for a long period of time
betsyh_-_NH :oh -
betsyh_-_NH :the Aqualon has a higher quality of Taklon & is fuller
DianeN-FL :Thank you Betsy
Dpr :Von, please ask your question.
betsyh_-_NH :the other brush hair varieties are different and really are like comparing apples & oranges
ViaVon :Betsy, for anyone with carpal tunnel or other physical issues similar to that ... which would you recommend, the new brushes for kids or the Soft Grip?
betsyh_-_NH :again - personal preference
ViaVon :they have the same effect then on the physical comfort?
betsyh_-_NH :I suffer from both
betsyh_-_NH :for shorter periods of painting
betsyh_-_NH :I generally use tha BKC
ViaVon :ok thanks1
Dpr :Dorcas, please ask your question.
Dorcas-NL :Thanks, I'd like to know if there is a Canadian distributor for the Aqualon brushes
betsyh_-_NH :Yes, there is, but I don't know for sure who
betsyh_-_NH :does Cottage ring a bell?
ViaVon :Betsy, is this something the website would be helpful in providing information?
betsyh_-_NH :I met some very nice Canadians at ACCI
Dorcas-NL :I know the name, but haven't seen the Aqualon brushes on any Canadian websites
betsyh_-_NH :Yes, if it isn't posted on the website, just email customerservice@royalbrush.com
Dorcas-NL :thank you
ViaVon :Does anyone else have any questions for Betsy?
Dpr :Dorcas, please ask your question.
betsyh_-_NH :Do you have any questions about when to use what brush?
BUZZ-CT :Yes von
Dorcas-NL :Thanks again, I notice in the fusion and aqualon sets there are different amounts of brushes. The fusion gives you one of each brush in that line but aqualon doesn't - is there a reason for that
betsyh_-_NH :Actually the Aqua-Pro set has the same number and types as the Fusion-Pro
Dorcas-NL :Thank you, its the Aqua Pro I will be wanting then :)
betsyh_-_NH :I think so
ViaVon :Ok Buzz, your turn! :-)
BUZZ-CT :Betsy..the Soft Grips shaders have a good chisel edge...has the comapny done any test to determine the lenght of life that tese brushes will perfom well
betsyh_-_NH :Yes - there have been some tests
betsyh_-_NH :again, under the same conditions
BUZZ-CT :results/
betsyh_-_NH :the Soft-Grip Taklons hold up for at least 50 hrs. of painting
BUZZ-CT :thank you
betsyh_-_NH :the Aqualon wil at least double that
Dpr :Diane, please ask your question.
BUZZ-CT :good to know
DianeN-FL :I didn't know about pro sets Betsy maybe you could elab on that a little bit and if you have some more info on when to use what brushes that would be so cool
betsyh_-_NH :the Pro is a designation arbitrarily set up by Royal to denote a more complete set of brushes
betsyh_-_NH :the Pro assortments have more brushes than most other sets
betsyh_-_NH :however, the round sets have a larger number of round brushes
betsyh_-_NH :the shaders - more shaders, etc.
DianeN-FL :That's a good idea I think. If some need replaced cause of use that would be easy enough to do without replacing the whole set
betsyh_-_NH :right
DianeN-FL :Oh wait I didn't understand, the pro sets are specific to brush shape?
betsyh_-_NH :no - Pro sets are assorted
DianeN-FL :Oh okay thanks for that Betsy
ViaVon :and the second half of Diane's question .... when to use what brush. :-)
betsyh_-_NH :ok - that's a large order
ViaVon :lol any quick pointers? lol
betsyh_-_NH :first you need to determine what you want to do
betsyh_-_NH :for instance
betsyh_-_NH :for marblizing
DianeN-FL :Sorry I thought you asked if we wanted to know that Betsy My mistake
betsyh_-_NH :I use a script liner for vein lines and soften with a goat's hair mop
betsyh_-_NH :for floation color
DianeN-FL :Yes float let s talk float a minute please
betsyh_-_NH :I use the largest possible shader
betsyh_-_NH :ok - float
betsyh_-_NH :what do you want to know?
DianeN-FL :Which of the brushes hold the most in your opinion. Aqualon or Majestic as far as the bristle composition
DianeN-FL :And hold for water, sorry
betsyh_-_NH :I believe that the Majestic will hold more water
DianeN-FL :Thank you Betsy I'll shut up now everybody knows how to float but me LOL
betsyh_-_NH :personally, even though it holds more water, I think the Majestic is too soft
Dpr :Von, please ask your question.
betsyh_-_NH :But - experiment
DianeN-FL :I will definately thank you
ViaVon :Betsy -- you said that the Aqualon is tested up to double 50 .... is that standard norm for top quality brushes?
betsyh_-_NH :Well, there really is no standard
betsyh_-_NH :the National Art Materials Testing group in Boston
betsyh_-_NH :is the standard setting agency for art materials in the U.S.
betsyh_-_NH :and they have set no standards for how long brushes should last
betsyh_-_NH :are you aware that every art product sold in this country is tested by this group?
ViaVon :Betsy, no, I wasn't aware of that! Thank you. One final query -- has Royal internally compared it's Aqualon to it's top competitor ?
betsyh_-_NH :every product will have a round seal or a square seal
betsyh_-_NH :officially, no
ViaVon :ok ... I have! Want my results? LOL
betsyh_-_NH :I have tested Royal's brushes against several others, however
betsyh_-_NH :yes - I'd LOVE to hear
ViaVon :Aqualon held up better and chisel still fine after one solid year of painting 4+ hours a day as a rule
betsyh_-_NH :WAHOO!!!!!!
betsyh_-_NH :Now I have a question
ViaVon :yup! I asked for more for Christmas last. lol
ViaVon :Go ahead Betsy!
betsyh_-_NH :are you good to your brushes?
DianeN-FL :I am wonderful to my brushes they love me
ViaVon :Well *hanging head in shame* not really -- I'm a beginner painter, you know. :-(
DianeN-FL :That's it Von your fired
betsyh_-_NH :I hate to admit it, but I'm not
ViaVon :That's why I love the Aqualon and the Soft Grip
ViaVon :they deal with my learning curve! lol
betsyh_-_NH :they really take abuse!
ViaVon :pffffffttttt Diane! lol
Dorcas-NL :I'm terrible with my brushes - I clean them well but often get called away from my painting and leave them sitting in water while I'm gone
ViaVon :Yes they do, Betsy!
betsyh_-_NH :do you know the best way to clean brushes?
betsyh_-_NH :use shampoo & conditioner
ViaVon :no way!
ViaVon :*gasp*
ViaVon :what brand/
betsyh_-_NH :after all - brushes are hair
Dpr :I quess that we are now in the free communication mode. Have at it guys.
ViaVon :lol thanks David!
betsyh_-_NH :thank you , David
ViaVon :But what about the Golden Taklon -- aren't they synthetic?
betsyh_-_NH :synthetic hair - just like a wig
Dorcas-NL :hooray, boy oh boy do I have a hard time trying to be disciplined in chat :)
ViaVon :LOL Dorcas!!!
ViaVon :Ok --- have at it everyone! LOL
betsyh_-_NH :lather up your brush with shampoo
ViaVon :Betsy -- does it matter what brand then?
DianeN-FL :Von , dove has a new shampoo and conditioner. Brushes are like hairs right?
betsyh_-_NH :rinse well
ViaVon :well yes, but I didn't realize one cleaned one's "wig" with shampoo and conditioner! lol
Dorcas-NL :I use a mild dish liquid to wash my brushes, shampoo sounds good to me though. :)
betsyh_-_NH :put a little conditioner on your fingers and reshape your bristles
BUZZ-CT :Betsy...my rule of thumb has always been.....natural hairs for natural paint Oils and Water.....synthetic for acrylics
betsyh_-_NH :that's a good one, Buzz - but today's synthetice mimic natural so well
ViaVon :Betsy -- what is the Synthetic Combo of Royal's used for again?
betsyh_-_NH :that you can use quality synthetic for water or oils
betsyh_-_NH :Combos are a mixture of synthetic and natural
ViaVon :for which medium application?
betsyh_-_NH :and can be used for various media
BUZZ-CT :for cleaning......dipp brush inretarder until ready to claen and the the old Murphy soap followed by masters hand soap
DianeN-FL :Is this too a line the combos Betsy and their name if so.
ViaVon :Betsy -- what about for a dry-brush technique -- which brush would use for that?
betsyh_-_NH :yes - it's the Combo line - supposed to give you the best of both worlds
DianeN-FL :Thank you Betsy
betsyh_-_NH :ahh - dry brush - the Langnickle short brights and scrumblers
Dorcas-NL :I clean my brushes by holding the bristles and gently wiggling and constantly going back to a cool running water, can't seem to get a good safe hold on the itty bitty brushes though, whats the best way to clean small brushes
DianeN-FL :Langnickles are wonderful brushes too Betsy
betsyh_-_NH :I also like the Fusion filberts for dry brushing
BUZZ-CT :Dry brush....an old worn brush trimed down close to thferule
betsyh_-_NH :to clean little brushes
Dorcas-NL :my favourite dry brush is an old cheap angular I had that is ruined.
betsyh_-_NH :rinse under running water, then
DianeN-FL :I've been cleaning my brushes lately with Brush Cleaner from Delta ceramcoat I think there's alcohol in it that seems to melt paint away This might help you Dorcas
BUZZ-CT :Well must go...nice to talk to you Betsy as always...you to Von and dave
ViaVon :byebyeBuzz!
betsyh_-_NH :put shampoo in the palm of your hand
ViaVon :Thanks for coming. :-)
Dorcas-NL :Bye Buzz
BUZZ-CT :bye all
betsyh_-_NH :bye Buzz
betsyh_-_NH :lather up brush in palm - rinse thoroughly
betsyh_-_NH :alcohol is a solvent for acrylic paint
DianeN-FL :I was so happy to recently learn this Betsy
Dpr :I have to go stir my crock pot. Take care, Everyone.
betsyh_-_NH :bye
Dorcas-NL :okey dokey, I'm always afraid I won't get all the paint out
ViaVon :bye David ... thank you for your help! **smooches**
Dorcas-NL :Bye David, thanks
DianeN-FL :Bye Dave and thank you
ViaVon :is alcohol hard on the brushes if used each time?
Peni-OR :whats in the crock pot David??
Dorcas-NL :I have used alcohol on my brushes, but I've always found the brushes hard to use afterwards. Like they're always too dry
DianeN-FL :I use it all the time Von then I have to put soap and softner of them I just have to. Everytime.
ViaVon :that's what I would think, Dorcas
betsyh_-_NH :yes, alcol can dry out your brushes
Dorcas-NL :Peni, thank you for the rose pattern I found on your website, they were perfect for a project I just finished. :)
DianeN-FL :Yes Dorcas I'm sure it will happen just like for hair you have to condition when using harseness. this is where conditioner would come in handy
ViaVon :Diane... when you get the Fini and drag your brush through it like water, you'll find the brushes are easier to clean and may not have to use the harsh cleaner
betsyh_-_NH :that's why it's important to use conditioner
ViaVon :Test it :-)
Peni-OR :Rose pattern??
Peni-OR :you me in my garden site??
DianeN-FL :von I don't think it's too harse, cause delta makes it
DianeN-FL :From my old hairdressing days hair will get hard if you but chemicals on it must condition same thing with paint brushes
Dorcas-NL :Yep, Rosebud Inset for Furniture
DianeN-FL :Perms, color you know ladies
ViaVon :Diane, you could be right. I'm not sure of it's contents. I like two products best and as I said, my brushes have been going strong for a full year now of my abuse! lol
betsyh_-_NH :if you use conditioner, be sure to rinse it out before you start to paint again
DianeN-FL :I'm looking forward to use Fini Von I really am, I'm a sponge these days ya know.
Peni-OR :I have had a Royal brush I that has last longer than any in keeping chicel edge #10 still is good even tho most of the wite paint on handel is gone
Dorcas-NL :Peni, that was copyrighted in 2001
ViaVon :I love the Emu Oil Soap for regular washing and the Pink Soap for stubborn cleanings
DianeN-FL :Oh thank you Betsy reminding to rinse yep
betsyh_-_NH :you're welcome
ViaVon :Diane -- I'm a sponge too!
Peni-OR :Ok I'm with ypou now roses on the paws site!
Dorcas-NL :I love Fini. I always have trouble floating and Fini has help tons
Peni-OR :For got it was ther Dorcas
ViaVon :for me too Dorcas!
betsyh_-_NH :it's always a good idea to swish your brush in water each time before you load it on paint
Peni-OR :Is this an informal chat.. Sorry if I have talked out of turn.
Dorcas-NL :Its a wonderful pattern Peni, first time I've done roses that even look like a rose :)
Peni-OR :I'm so glad!! great!!
ViaVon :Betsy, many of us are hooked on priming our brushes with Fini now because of the asset it brings to the stroke work. We're highly biased for floating with it too! lol
Peni-OR :Have you looked at my other free patterns Dorcas??
betsyh_-_NH :I don't know about Fini
ViaVon :Peni -- we're at informal now. lol
Dorcas-NL :Yes, I go to your site on a regular basis, I'm a free pattern junkie LOL
Peni-OR :Ok Thanks!!
ViaVon :Betsy -- it's made by the Final Coat people?
Peni-OR :LOL
DianeN-FL :Peni website? Where are ya girl?
betsyh_-_NH :ahhhhhh
ViaVon :It's a glaze but has a versatility to it that is incredible!
Peni-OR :http://paletteofcolors.hispeed.com
DianeN-FL :Thank you Peni
betsyh_-_NH :I think I need to try it
Peni-OR :You can do it page
ViaVon :Diane -- she's in both my resources as well as link exchanges :-)
Peni-OR :Great medium Betsy
Dorcas-NL :I still have tons of Final coat, but I can see that soon my credit card is gonna get a going over, I need new brushes badly and a new supply of Fini, some new books wouldn't hurt anything either :)
ViaVon :Betsy -- it's on special this week! LOLOLOL
Dorcas-NL :Video's, gotta get more videos, no classes available to me so video is the way
ViaVon :**hint hint hint** LOL
ViaVon :Dorcas, where are you again? Been sitting here trying to figure out that NL since you got here. *blush*
DianeN-FL :Okay thank you Von I'll check the resources.
betsyh_-_NH :did you say you used to be in marketing or sales??????
Dorcas-NL :Newfoundland
ViaVon :Betsy -- me? both.
Dorcas-NL :Big island, few people, fewer supplies and services for decorative painters
ViaVon :WOW Dorcas, no wonder you need videos! Hokey Pete.
ViaVon :You should open a shop out of your home or something. :-)
Sharon....ON :Dorcas are there many painters on the Rock?
Dorcas-NL :I have several decent ones, but the ones I have my eyes on now are gonna cost
Peni-OR :You teach ther Dorcus
Peni-OR :Opps Salad fingers tonight
Dorcas-NL :Yes Sharon, I think there's quite a few of us, but we are so far apart from each other that its impractical to try getting together
Dorcas-NL :No, Peni I'm nowhere good enough to teach
Sharon....ON :I live near Ottawa,
betsyh_-_NH :Dorcus - how did you start painting?
ViaVon :that is too bad, Dorcas. The internet is a huge resource of painting fellowship for you then
DianeN-FL :You want we come and get you Dorcus?
Dorcas-NL :I can't wait for another trip to Ontario, I usually go shopping mad and send packages home for dh to unload for me :)
ViaVon :lol
betsyh_-_NH :LOL
Dorcas-NL :I have a neighbour who got me started, but she isn't interested in teaching
Sharon....ON :Next time try Ottawa and we can get together. I am a beginner painter and loving every bit of It.
ViaVon :probably isn't a place on the beaten path for travel teachers either, hmmm?
betsyh_-_NH :Where did she learn?
Peni-OR :*applause*
Dorcas-NL :I have heard of a woman about an hours drive from me who is giving strokework classes, but I'm due for surgery and can't sign up for classes until thats done
ViaVon :somebuddy take a bow quick! lol
Dorcas-NL :She is self taught and very talanted
Peni-OR :thought Betsy should
betsyh_-_NH :ok - why?
ViaVon :indeed! I've loved these brushes since I started painting and now have even more reason to love them!
Dorcas-NL :no travel teachers, it would just be so expensive that most people here couldn't afford the class fees.
Peni-OR :You did such a good job this evening
ViaVon :Because you came and taught, Betsy! :-) Thank you!
betsyh_-_NH :many thanks
DianeN-FL :Cause your the star
betsyh_-_NH :it was my pleasure
ViaVon :I see a halo there too, I'm sure of it!
DianeN-FL :Star of Betsy LOL
ViaVon :rotfl
betsyh_-_NH :rotflmho
Dorcas-NL :Yes, betsy, I can't tell you how much this session has helped me. Like I said I'm in the market for new brushes and this time I want to spend my money wisely
Peni-OR :Betsy may I ask question?
betsyh_-_NH :sure
ViaVon :(Peni is busy typing)
Dorcas-NL :I spent $300 in brushes last year at Kaswood and I can't believe how disappointed I was in the quality when I got to using them
ViaVon :ouch Dorcas!
Peni-OR :What kind of programs does Royal have for lets say I'm doing free patterns on my website using brush . or if I sell patterns and instructions are using your Brushes?
betsyh_-_NH :nothing for web -
Dorcas-NL :My two aqualon's I bought when a craft store was going out of business here, I absolutely love those brushes, so much that I'm half afraid to use them cause I don't want to use them out.
DianeN-FL :Good question Peni
Peni-OR :thanks??
betsyh_-_NH :there are fees for patterns and magazines and books
ViaVon :Betsy -- what about for self-publishing?
betsyh_-_NH :that depends on how they are distributed
Peni-OR :Ok , just thought ther might be a benfit to just using Royal on my free patterns.
ViaVon :one of the publishing firms or magazines approved then?
Peni-OR :Right now I use several brands
betsyh_-_NH :there is asliding scale based on exposure - magazine subscription numbers, distribution, etc
ViaVon :That's very interesting to know. Thanks Betsy.
Peni-OR :They should think on that for websites too!! I get a lot of trafic
betsyh_-_NH :to qualify, you must use'at least 3 brushes - all Royal
DianeN-FL :Makes sense Betsy, big company need big exposure and have rules to accommodate. Too bad for the small business owner though
betsyh_-_NH :I have been lobbying for fees for internet
Dorcas-NL :Thank you so much for this Von, its getting late here on the rock and I'm off to beddy bye land. Good night everybody
betsyh_-_NH :no luck yet
ViaVon :Well, it's sadder for those who want to self-publish. The big companies and magazines are inundated with submissions and the competition means the little people are out of the pix.
DianeN-FL :Good I hope that lobbying pays off net is still new really
ViaVon :Nnigh tnight (((Dorcas)))
ViaVon :Thanks for coming!!
Peni-OR :Great!! maybe Royal need to look at a few sites that offer free patterns Painting is so big on the web.
betsyh_-_NH :I need amunition
ViaVon :how so, Betsy?
Peni-OR :Night Dorcas
Peni-OR :Ok what you need?
betsyh_-_NH :tell me why there should be fees for self publishing & nrt
betsyh_-_NH :net
betsyh_-_NH :I need to have reasons & facts
Peni-OR :oh dear in 60 words or less?
betsyh_-_NH :why should a company pay?
ViaVon :ahhhhhh ... provide the numbers to substantiate the costs
Peni-OR :ok have to think on that
DianeN-FL :Many people self publish their books and patterns Betsy this is rather new but not so uncommon today, I don't know what you mean actually.
ViaVon :bottom line = dollars and cents
betsyh_-_NH :you got it
DianeN-FL :Peni you have free patterns but not all of them are free right?
Peni-OR :books I have published were self published
ViaVon :Royal could go broke paying for self-publishers who's patterns never get bought to show people and help sell the brushes used
Peni-OR :yes all my patterns are free Diane
betsyh_-_NH :true, Von
DianeN-FL :Oh I didn't know. Endorsement is what you were talking about then right?
Peni-OR :Thats true Von
ViaVon :Peni -- that was a profesionnally done book though honey
betsyh_-_NH :yes
ViaVon :the books that you had published ... you had how many copies printed?
Peni-OR :your talking home style publishing
ViaVon :yes .... like what I do is what I classify as self-publishing
ViaVon :that would not even begin to pay for Royal to endorse or compensate me
ViaVon :do you see what I mean ?
ViaVon :Now think in terms of your free patterns. There's no financial incentive there either.
Peni-OR :Had me confussed because ours was self published, we paided and did all the leg work and contacts
ViaVon :The bottom line is that the money is not justified on Royal's end for those venues.
betsyh_-_NH :it's always the bottom line
ViaVon :exactly
ViaVon :marketing and sales ... it all comes down to that in the end
DianeN-FL :boy that's for sure everything is. Big bottoms too lines that is
DianeN-FL :Bottom lines millions is more like what they are thinking.
betsyh_-_NH :I always have to prove that a program is cost effective
Peni-OR :7500
ViaVon :what?
DianeN-FL :customers ?
betsyh_-_NH :if a company can't make money, it can't stay in business
Peni-OR :Company have to go.. thank you very much Von & Betsy
ViaVon :((((Peni))))) thanks honey!
Peni-OR :Bye
betsyh_-_NH :good night - I'm off, too
DianeN-FL :Betsy thank you so much I learned a whole bunch about the brushes I have lining my table in there
ViaVon :Betsy, please don't feel like you have to hang around if you need to get going there too, ok? I can not tell you how much I've enjoyed this tonite!
ViaVon :Thanks!
betsyh_-_NH :bye
ViaVon :byebye :-)
DianeN-FL :Thank you too Von.
ViaVon :You're welcome Diane! It's my pleasure!
DianeN-FL :Talk at ya later my friend.
ViaVon :enjoy the night!
DianeN-FL :nite now
ViaVon :night
