TRANSCRIPT LOG OF April 27,2005

ViaVon:

Good Evening Everyone!

David and I, along with our Guest Speaker, Jillybean want to thank you for coming to our Seminar on the Dynasty Black Gold Wave Artist Brush -- the FANDANGO!

Just to remind you again on what we expect from you this evening ... First, please refrain from speaking during Jillybean's Presentation. She will let us know when she is ready for your Questions.

To put yourself in the queue for the Question and Answer session, please type ONLY an * asterisk. Nothing more.  Just remember that Shift+8 is your asterisk to put yourself into queue for questions later during our Q&A Session!

Next then -- wait for your name to be called to ask your question. When Jillybean has answered your question, she will ask you if your question is concluded. Please reply yes or finish asking your question.

This may sound a bit *stuffy* but it allows for everyone to have a turn asking and getting answers to their questions in a way that doesn't confuse both you, our Guest and Jillybean, our Guest Speaker. :-)

Thanks for your cooperation!

Now before we begin we want to let all of you know that IF you are intending to paint along and get lost ... not to worry. You will be able to obtain a complete transcript of tonite's seminar for your review later as well as the tutorial and photo images. So no need to panic, ok? :-)   We have this available in three different formats for you later after the presentation. : -)

During the presentation, Jillybean will be showing you various visuals as part of her class. You'll be able to click on the provided urls which SHOULD open in a new window for you to see the photos. Just close that window when you've finished. :-)

Also -- if you'd like a personal reminder to your email on our seminars, please set up a user account for yourself at our main website.
And now ... let's get on with the FUN!! **handing over microphone to Jillybean**

Take it away Jillybean!

jillybean:

Hello everyone! I'm very excited to introduce you to a fun new brush called the Fandango!

Fandango is has a registered trademark and Patient Pending with FM Brush Company.

Fandango in Spanish means go and dance. That is exactly what this brush will do. Dance across your painting.

This brush was originally designed by FM Brush as part of the Dynasty Black Gold line of brushes. When they showed it to me I fell in love with it.

The Fandango is perfect for creating fluffy Santa beards, fur, feathers, grass, hair and more.

Please refer to Figure 1
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure1.html

FM Brush Co., Inc. is the primary manufacturer of artist, cosmetic, surgical, ceramic, craft, and custom-made brushes that are distributed worldwide. They will actually be selling some of their cosmetic brush sets at the SDP Tampa convention in May.

Originally established in 1929 by Frederick Mink, the Mink family now has nearly 70 years of experience in creating high-quality brushes that feature the right blend of form and function. Four generations of the Mink family have led the FM Brush Company to become a worldwide leader in brush manufacturing.

They introduced the Black Gold line of brushes about 8 years ago and have been adding new shapes and sizes to it ever since. Linda Lover has been their main designer for the past 5 years. I personally became involved with FM Brush a little over a year ago. Linda really got me excited about all the wonderful wave brushes and the fun things you could do with them.

When I first tried the Black Gold it felt like I was painting with silk. I'm still using the same brushes that they started me with and I'm really hard on my brushes. I can actually do nice stroke work with the round brushes.

FM Brush and DecoArt sponsor my painting seminars by paying for the airfare and hotel. So if you belong to a chapter and would like me to come to your area to teach, please email me for more information. jillybeanf@aol.com You can also check out my new web site to see my current travel schedule and available designs. http://www.jillybean.net/

Let's get back to the fun stuff.

With just a few easy tips you will be able to master the Fandango in no time. The purpose of the brush is to be able to paint multiple lines in just one stroke. The look is similar to a rake brush but with the Fandango you get more natural looking lines that vary in width. This brush is currently available in a size 6 but a smaller size 2 will be ready soon.

Please refer to Figure 2
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure2.html

When you look closely at the hairs you will see there are short hairs between the long hairs. This helps to hold more fluid paint and allows you to make longer strokes. The best way to see the benefit of the hairs is to look at it wet. You can definitely see the great separation at the tips.

Please refer to Figure 3
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure3.html

Now let's look at how to use the Fandango.

Paint Consistency The first thing you want to do is thin the paint color with 50% water. This will give you ink like consistency the same as you use for liner work. Mix a big puddle of paint and water and be sure to use a dry palette. It won't work as well on a stay wet type palette because the puddle of paint will soak into the palette too fast.

Please refer to Figure 4
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure4.html

Loading the Brush with Paint Load the brush with paint and look at the tips to make sure they separate nicely. If you have too much paint on the brush the tips will cling together so wipe the excess off on the palette.

Please refer to Figure 5
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure5.html

Holding the Brush Hold the brush at a 90-degree angle with the handle pointing straight up at the ceiling. Hold the handle with your fingers up higher than you normally would for stroke work. This will allow you to move the brush more freely. You will want to move your entire arm not just your wrist when make your strokes. Don't apply any pressure - just tickle the surface with the tips of the brush. If you apply too much pressure or don't keep your brush handle straight up, you will get a solid stroke instead of multiple lines. The lighter your touch the thinner the multiple lines will be.

Please refer to Figure 6
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure6.html

Now lets try painting a Santa Beard!

Step 1 - Basecoat with thin lines. Start with a dark background. Use White paint thinned with 50% water. Begin by establishing the flow of beard hair. There are lots of different ways to do Santa beards. Some are curly, some are wavy and some are straight.

Please refer to Figure 7
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure7.html

Step 2 - Float shadows. When dry, float with a dark color like Burnt Umber, Payne's Gray, Deep Midnight Blue, or Black Plum. Use a 1/2" or larger, angle or flat brush to shade under the lip, around the outside edges of the mustache and on the mustache under the nose. Also float the color vertically to create or separate layers of waves.

Please refer to Figure 8
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure8.html

My method of floating color is a little different than most people but it has proven to work easier if you have been struggling with this technique. I like to moisten the area with a small amount of water before floating color. Wet your brush with water. Blot it once on the paper towel so the water shine will disappear. Dip the long corner of the brush in the center of the paint, (not the outside edge), and blend the excess paint off on the palette. Be careful when blending to not let the color sneak over to the clean corner of the brush.

Step 3 - Highlight with more white lines. Add more white for highlights using the Fandango. Always thin the paint with water so it flows off the brush easily. Try to stay in the center areas of the beard to build up whiter areas. If you lose too much of your shadows just go back a step and add them again. You need the dark areas to make the white areas look whiter. Add more white to the bottom tips of the mustache too. Sometimes you need to let the white dry and then do it one more time. You could also add a few wavy flyaway hairs with a long script brush.

Please refer to Figure 9
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure9.html

Step 4 - Color Tints It's always fun to add a tint of color throughout the beard to create more interest. Use a flat or angle brush and thin the paint color with 80% water so it is very transparent. Add the color randomly, not really trying to hit any particular areas.

Please refer to Figure 10
http://www.viavon.com/seminars/fandango/fandangoseminar_figure10.html

TA DAH!!!

You have a Santa Beard.

woohoo lol lol

If you visit my web site http://www.jillybean.net/ you will find lots of Santa designs.

Keep in mind that the old instructions may call for a rake but I now prefer to use the Fandango.

It's so fun and easier to use!

I'm now ready for any questions.

Dave: KathyB-Tx, please feel free to ask your question.
stephmca: *
KathyB-Tx: *
jillybean: Ok, should we start all over? heehee
KathyB-Tx: on the basecoating do you use the fandango also?
jillybean: When I refer to basecoating the beard with thin lines yes.
KathyB-Tx: ok thanks
KathyB-Tx: that was all
jillybean: Otherwise for backgrounds I use a flat brush.
KathyB-Tx: ok thank you
NancyJ-MN: *
TonyaH-NC: *
Dave: KathyB-Tx, please feel free to ask your question.
Dave: VickiA-Fl, please feel free to ask your question.
VickiA-FL: It looked like when you were painting the beard, you painted it from the bottom up. Is that right?
KathyB-Tx: I did Dave: but I think I hit the button again not remembering that I had already hit it, sorry.
jillybean: I will paint from both directions.
jillybean: I like to fip the painting around a lot.
Peni-OR: *
VickiA-FL: what makes you decide which way to go
jillybean: When I fisrt set the brush down that is when the most paint will come off.
VickiA-FL: okay, thanks Jillybean!
jillybean: If I don't want to get into the shadows, I will start at the bottom of the beard.
ViaVon: Did that answer your question Vicki?
VickiA-FL: yep! thanks
Dave: bmaxwell-NV, please feel free to ask your question.
bmaxwell-NV: Thank you both ViaVon: and Jillybean........When can the small fandango brush be available and are there any more sizes to be available in the future? That is my one and only question.
ViaVon: **waving** I know the answer! lol
bmaxwell-NV: OK
jillybean: The small ones are being made even as we speak.
jillybean: They hope to be ready in 30 days or less.
ViaVon: There is a size 2 in the works now ... but we do not have an ETA for it's arrival nor do we have an MSRP on it yet! Watch for our newsletter announcing when it happens because we'll let you know right away!
LindaA-IA: *
jillybean: I really think that the 2 sizes might be all you need.
jillybean: Did that answer your question?
bmaxwell-NV: Thank you for your answers Yes, that is all I had.
Dave: ViaVon: , please feel free to ask your question.
ViaVon: Jillybean ... you use a lot of water with your paint. Could we use a medium such as Fini instead to help retain full strength paint pigment?
jillybean: I'm not familar with Fini. The reason I use water is I don't like to wait for extenders to dry.
ViaVon: ahhh yes that makes sense! Thanks that answered my question. :-)
jillybean: The water method has proven very effective in my seminars.
Dave: Debin_SC, please feel free to ask your question.
Debin_SC Thank you so much for having this!
jillybean: Your welcome.
stephmca: *
ViaVon: Please remember to type an * asterisk * to put yourself into queue for your Questions and Answers and then watch to be invited to ask your question. Roxy: *
jillybean: I will be doing demos at the Dynasty Brush booth in Tampa but no classes.
Debin_SC: I will be ther to see ya and buy ! ! *LOL*
jillybean: I'm on the SDP board and have a lot of meetings.
jillybean: Thank you Debin
Dave: AmandaMAU, please feel free to ask your question.
AmandaMAU: you use a dark background then use fandango to basecoat the first lines to establish the flow of the beard, do you paint those in the beard colour or lighter shade of the background colour using a fandango or round brush?
jillybean: Use White paint thinned with 50% water.
jillybean: I do use the Fandango.
AmandaMAU: ok so no greys and fandango is used throughout
jillybean: If you use a light color background, then make dark lines first.
AmandaMAU: in what colour would you suggest?
ViaVon: Please remember to type an * asterisk * to put yourself into queue for your Questions and Answers and then watch to be invited to ask your question. And don't forget ... you will be able to obtain a complete transcript of tonite's seminar for your review later as well as the tutorial and photo images. So don't panic about what you may have missed. :-)
jillybean: You could use almost anything. Black, Black Plum, Deep Midnight Blue, Burnt Umber.
jillybean: Then when that is dry. Start with the white.
AmandaMAU: ok thank you so much, are you planning to come to australia one day?
DionW-CA: *
jillybean: I would love to go to Australia. Tell someone to invite me. heehee
ViaVon: good answer! rotfl
AmandaMAU: will do ....
Dave: DebW_Vt, please feel free to ask your question.
DebW_Vt: Do you clean the Fandango between different strokes?
jillybean: Only if I'm changing colors.
DebW_Vt: Also, do you spread out the bristles to load?
jillybean: Since I use a lot of water in my technique, I'm not worried about the paint drying on the bristles.
DebW_Vt: Thanks...great class:)
Dave: VickiA-FL, please feel free to ask your question.
jillybean: You may want to spread the bristles at the same time as you are loading the wet paint.
DebW_Vt: k..thanks
DebW_Vt: done :)
Dave: VickiA-Fl do you have a question
Dave: Mary-TN, please feel free to ask your question.
ViaVon: we'll come back to VickiA-Fl later then, ok?
Dave: stephmca, please feel free to ask your question.
stephmca: Wow, what a ride-this has been a blast-thank you. What did you use for your last color tint? How do we get the transcript.
jillybean: I used true blue for the last color on this one.
jillybean: I love to use all different colors.
jillybean: You could use lavendar, pink, blush, etc.
ViaVon: Steph, the transcript should be available upon exit from this class tonite. The chat portion of this class will be available on Friday at the latest. If you aren't magically transported to the seminar archive upon exit, you can go to our Classroom and then click on the seminar archive library
stephmca: Thanks Von and also for this great informative evening. Thanks JillyBean also. Bye
jillybean: Your welcome.
Dave: NancyJ-MN, please feel free to ask your question.
ViaVon: you're welcome Steph :-)
TonyaH-NC: My question has already been answered, thanks
NancyJ-MN: I have so enjoyed your seminars and classes over the years. This brush sounds just wonderful and I cannot wait to try one! Will the Fandango be available through ViaVon and, if so, how soon?
Dave: Peni-OR, please feel free to ask your question.
jillybean: Nancy is one of my very best friends in MN. She has been my partner in crime for many years.
Peni-OR: This looks like the best of two worlds when it comes to brushes in the past have used rake and a fan to achive the look I wanted when painting hair and beards. This looks like an all in one.. Guess I need to have one of these magic brushes..VON!!! What sizes do they come in?
ViaVon: Nancy - it's been available for almost a month now ... and on special too! lol
ViaVon: You'll find it in our Brush/Dynasty/Black Gold Waves line of products. :-)
Wolf-Mom: *
ViaVon: Peni -- just one size at present but as we said earlier there is a number 2 size coming out
ViaVon: soon we hope!
ViaVon: Peni do you have any questions for Jillybean?
Peni-OR: ok let me know for I am sure I would like a smallerone.
ViaVon: will do! :-)
Peni-OR: Thank you so much!!
NancyJ-MN: Thank you--I will definitely revisit your site! And thank you Ms Bean --I have thoroughly enjoyed our partnership in crime! It has been so much fun. Thank you so much, and I must go--but this was really fun!
ViaVon: Thank you for coming Nancy!
jillybean: Thank you!
Dave: LindaA-IA, please feel free to ask your question.
LindaA-IA: Will both brushes be sold as a set when the size 2 becomes available? When cleaning the Fandango brush between colors do you use water or just wipe on a paper towel?
JK: *
NancyJ-MN: And thanks back to you both....
jillybean: Use water to clean the brush.
ViaVon: Linda - if FM Brush doesn't make a kit ... we at Via Von's will certainly do so! :-)
Debin_SC: *applause*
LindaA-IA: Thank you all very much for an enjoyable and informative evening!
MaryW-DE: Thank you so much Jillybean, Von and Dave
jillybean: This has really been a lot of fun.
Polly: *applause*
Dave: Wolf-Mom, please feel free to ask your question.
KathyB-Tx: This has been great, I want to thank Von & Dave for hosting this you did a great job and thank you Jill for taking the time to teach us.
MaryW-DE: I learned a lot. Expect a order when I get some money Von
juned-nc: What city in NC will you be in?
ViaVon: Hold up everyone ... we've got more questions yet! :-)
Dave: Wolf-Mom has a question, Ok Wolf-Mom
jillybean: If you go to the SDP web site and look up chapters. www.decorativepainters.org
Dave: juned-nc, please feel free to ask your question.
juned-nc: What city in NC will you be in?
jillybean: You will be able to click on the contact person for the state. Then look for Crystal Coast Dec. Painters
ViaVon: June, did that answer your question?
juned-nc: I guess it did. I'm still not sure how to find this out. Thanks Jillybean, Von and Dave
jillybean: If you email me your question. I will look in my file to find the exact info for you.
Peni-OR: nite!! Thank you
Dave: Is that ok, Juned-nc?
Dave: DionW-CA , please feel free to ask your question.
DionW-CA: Do you cordinate your dark beard colors with your Santa's attire? And do you use less water toward the end of painting the beard(highlighting)?
jillybean: Yes, that's a great question.
jillybean: I like to use some of the background color or colors for the clothes to either tint or shade the beards.
jillybean: I do try to use less water towards the end because I want a more opaque white.
DionW-CA: Thankyou so much, this has been great!
jillybean: If you thin the paint with too much water it will be too transparent.
jillybean: Did that answer your question?
DionW-CA: Yes, thankyou :D
Dave: JK, please feel free to ask your question.
JK: Hi Jillybean.. This is along the lines of Dion's question....would you every use this brush dry for a "dry brush" look?
jillybean: Yes you certainly can. I have barely begone to experiment with it. I'm sure the uses will be endless.
JK: cool. thanks so much I learned alot....you're the best!
jillybean: Thank you!
Dave: Does anyone else have a question?
SabrinaB-Tx: A big hug & thanks for 2night!! I missed ur workshop b4 in my Art League(with the rake)! Is there a place best to begin the beard at, meaning lip area, a cheek side? or is it what is most comfy for you?
SabrinaB-Tx: *
Dave: good for you, Sabrina! hehehe
jillybean: I usually start any where at the top of the beard, ie under the lip, sides of the face, etc.
SabrinaB-Tx: sorry, I was skipped way back and didn't want to lose out on my ? lol
jillybean: I also like to skip around and not just go from one side all the way to the other.
Dave: I'm very sorry, my fault
ViaVon: awww we're so sorry about that, Sabrina! :-(
jillybean: Did that answer your question?
SabrinaB-Tx: yes, thanks alot, I can see how that would be best
Dave: If no one else has a question I think we should open it up for general discussion
DionW-CA: *
LynnS-CA: I think I got missed way back too. ;) So it is not necessary to have a solid basecoat with layers , like I'm used to? Just lightness with this brush and allow the background to show through? On the right track?
Dave: Again, I am sorry.
jillybean: Thats right. If you start with a dark background you can skip a step.
LynnS-CA: *
SabrinaB-Tx: 2 slaps on the wrist Dave, hee ehheee
jillybean: It also makes the santa more dramatic painting him on a dark background.
LynnS-CA: What if you have the Santa's clothes painted, coule you just start the beard with that showing through
jillybean: Yes you can, or you could do a few dark lines first with the Fandango to even everything out.
Dave: DionW-CA, I think it's open for general sharing but thanks for my delay
DionW-CA: Do you have any tips to share on painting small versions of your patterns? I like to paint pins
SabrinaB-Tx: Jillybean, I saw one of your Santa's on the back of a mens suit jacket after you had come to the workshop. Precious
jillybean: Oh my goodness!!
ViaVon: oh wow Dion!
LynnS-CA: Great! Thanks for a great class for my first time....I'm excited to paint Christmas again :)
jillybean: Unfortunately the Fandango is too big to use on timbles etc. You would just have to use a liner brush.
ViaVon: an extremely tiny liner I should think. :-)
jillybean: When I first started painting, all of the beards were done with a liner. Took forever.
Dave: Jillybean, thank you for a wonderful night!
SabrinaB-Tx: A ladies jacket looks so good painted like that to wear a Christmas time.
DionW-CA: I have used liners and small Chezza brush but the fandango looks good to try.
jillybean: You are very welcome. Thank you.
KathyB-Tx: yes and thank you and Von also
SabrinaB-Tx: *applause* *applause* *applause* *applause* *applause* *applause* *applause* *applause*

AmandaMAU: Thank you all *applause*
ViaVon: Now remember ... when you exit out, you'll be transported magically to the Seminar Archive Page for Jillybean's class tonite. IF you have a magic carpet accident, you can access the Class Room and then click on Seminar Archives Library to find it!
SabrinaB-Tx: It has been a wonderful first day as a group member!
ViaVon: LOL brenda !!!! ***Smooches**
LynnS-CA: Thanks you! *applause*
bmaxwell-NV: I first saw the Fandango on ViaVon's website. When I came home from the LV Creative Painting Convention and promptly ordered it.....Do wish they would hurry up with the smaller one.......Thank you Jillybean and ViaVon and Dave for a great class.
