DellaMarie :
Good evening all.
I am pleased to be here to talk to you about my brushes and about float shading. I LOVE float shading. I believe it makes all the difference between a so so piece and a really nice piece.
Float shading refers to both darkening areas with a float and lightening areas with a float. So even though we all call it float "shading" in my mind it is more accurately a float to enhance.
I have always preferred an angle brush for my floating as I can see better where the brush is going. I have detailed step by step directions on how to float that Von will furnish to you all.
The most important tip of all is to practice, practice, practice! I ask that my students talk to themselves while learning. Put brush in water, take the shine off etc.
Every time this is done our brain retains it more and more. Pretty soon there is not much thinking involved and you are whipping out beautiful floats.
I learned somewhere along the line that mopping the open edge of my float always softened it for a much more successful float. The problem was the throwing down of the angle brush to pick up the mop brush and having my float already starting to dry.
Or having one in my teeth, two in a hand and so forth. Got frustrating. Then I had the idea to put them together. That is how Della's Duo was born. Out of my own unhappiness with the clumsiness of my favorite way to get a beautiful float.
I also strongly push pyramid floating. Putting down 3 layers of a float with each layer being smaller and more intense than the one before. This makes a dark area darker or a hi light become brighter.
When using this technique or any time you are trying to enhance a float be very sure the first layer is completely dry. Ever put a hole in a piece because you went back over it too soon and them tried to fix it? That is no fun! Nope. No fun at all.
I have refined some of the ways I float to make them easier. I do not do flip floats (or back to back floats) anymore. I do my triangle floats differently and I do circular or bulls eye floats differently also.
Let me walk you through these 3 basic floats my way which I truly believe is an easier way.
Where a pattern calls for a back to back float most of the time no matter how careful we try to be there will be a line down the middle. Instead of laying down a float, turning the brush and laying one down beside it, this is what I do.
In the area to be floated, brush on some extender. I like JS but, any brand will do.
Now take the angle end of my brush and lay a small stroke of your color where the float is to go and then flip to the mop end and using an up and down pouncing motion work the color out. Beautiful!
You will do basically the same thing for a bulls eye float. Put extender where the float is to go, take the angle and tip the toe into your paint and
apply to the center of your float area and again flip to the mop end and using that same up and down motion work the color in a circle from the middle out.
The triangular float is actually another back to back float used a lot in creating in and out areas on petals.
I start at the widest part of the float area and simply do a walk out float with each stroke being smaller and smaller until I am where I want to end.
Then take the mop end and gently pounce up and down again to soften. You may have to redo this as most of the time a walk out float will have a "ladder" look to it. No problem.
The second float is repeated the same way and will smooth it out.
Another trick I use is to always do my floats in small overlapping strokes. This will give you complete control over where and how the float goes on.
If you try to just put that brush down and float until it stops you will have a float that will start breaking up on you and then you have to do all those repairing strokes. Nope.
Again, not fun. So using the smaller overlapping strokes will help keep your float very consistent and even.
When I am at conventions selling my brushes I demo floating all day every day. I often hand the brush to a potential customer and say here ....now you try.
Very often that person says it is the first time they have ever done a nice float. I am often thanked for showing them how to float shade whether they buy my brushes or not.
Pretty cool if you ask me! So that F word for floating can stand for FUN! Thanks for having me. Della
Question time!

ViaVon : *applause*
ViaVon : Thank YOU Della!!
Dave : Thank you!!!!
Diane_FL : *
JoanP-NS : Clap, Clap, Clap
ViaVon : For those who have entered late, all of these instructions will be in the Chat History and on the site by Saturday night at the latest!
Dave : *applause*
ViaVon : Diane -- you may ask your question
Dave : Thank you
MaryEllen-TX : *applause*
DellaMarie : Thank you
GladyLOH : "clap" and thank you...but storms approaching must leave
MaureenD_PA : *applause* Thanks, Della Marie
Diane_FL : Della on the torpedo float with the small strokes do you use extender on those?
MaryEllen-TX : Bye, Gladyl!
DellaMarie : No. I do however soften my water with color float.
Diane_FL : Thank you I'm sure you 've told me before but I forgot , thank you
MaryEllen-TX : *
DellaMarie : I only use extender on those 3 particular floats.
kariej-nc : *
ViaVon : MaryEllen -- you may ask your question
MaryEllen-TX : What three floats, first question...guess I wasn't paying attention...LOL
JoF-OC : *
DellaMarie : LOL... The round, flip and tornado floats.
DellaMarie : NO... I just said it wrong...Not on the tornado...LOL
Diane_FL : LOL
MaryEllen-TX : thanks, my question is that sometimes my float 'beads' up on me...is it possible I've put too much color float in?
DellaMarie : It could be. Color float is a glycerin product. Or you may have grease or oil on your pice from fingers etc.
DellaMarie : piece
CarolH-SC : *
DellaMarie : I use 10 drops to one OZ of water.
MaryEllen-TX : thanks...okay, now...if it is the round and the flip...what is the THIRD one?? LOL
DellaMarie : That ratio seems to work well.
BonnieG-KS : *
DellaMarie : The round and flip get extender.... ALL other floats are plain water or water with color float.
JoanP-NS : *
ViaVon : Did that answer your question ok, MaryElleN?
MaryEllen-TX : Okay, that answers my question, thanks! I LOVE your brushes! I've had them for about three months now...Diana P. told me about them and I told Von and the rest is history!! LOL
DellaMarie : The third float was the tornado and how I do it.
DellaMarie : Thank you. Glad to hear that!!!
ViaVon : Karie -- you're question is next then :-)
kariej-nc : You were talking about walking out the color. For soem reason mwhen I walk it out it looks choppy and layered with lines. do you have any suggestions
KathleenL_Canada : thanks Della , Von and dave- just got some company
kariej-nc : I know you said to mop it but i just can't seem to get it smooth
DellaMarie : There is almost always a ladder like look to a walk out. You just need ot soften it with the mop and hten let dry and repeat.
KathleenL_Canada [0/] Disconnect:216.249.5.180
kariej-nc : repeat the whole float?
DellaMarie : Also... Are you floating on the SIDE of your brush? NOT the tips?
DellaMarie : Yes... repeat the float.
kariej-nc : I know this sounds silly, but I'm not sure what you mean.
kariej-nc : by side or tip?
DellaMarie : You need to hold your brush ion your hand at about a 45 degree angle so all the bristles touch your piece.
kariej-nc : ok
kariej-nc : I will pay more attention to that and see how it works
kariej-nc : than you!
kariej-nc : Thank you I mean
DellaMarie : It makes a world of difference. I see a lot of people trying to get a nice float with their brushes held up. Won't happen.
DellaMarie : Does that clarify it?
kariej-nc : never knew that
kariej-nc : I will try it later and see
DellaMarie : Lay the brush on it's side as much as possible.
kariej-nc : I understand what you are saying
DellaMarie : OK
kariej-nc : I'm glad I logged on
DellaMarie : Thnaks.
kariej-nc : been having trouble with my float
DellaMarie : thanks
ViaVon : JoF -- your question is next then!
JoF-OC : Haven't seen the dual brushes,,,,,,,,do they come in different sizes??
DellaMarie : Yes. !/4, 3/8 and 1/2
JoF-OC : Thank you I will look for them
ViaVon : Jo, we provide a link when you exit out that will show you the brushes and their pricing :-)
DellaMarie : My web site and Von .... *)
JoF-OC : Thank you Von
MaryEllen-TX : They are WONDERFUL Has Made a WORLD of DIFFERNE
ViaVon : You're welcome Jo! Carol -- you're question is next!
MaryEllen-TX : DIFFERENCE in my painting...not much on my typing tho! LOL
DellaMarie : Thank you Mary Ellen
DellaMarie : LOL... Same here.
CarolH-SC : These are probably dumd questions, but what is color float..and i have never really understood walking out,,can you explain?
DellaMarie : OK... Color float comes from Delta, Float color comes from DeCo Art. They are products to keep your water wetter.
DellaMarie : Really.
CarolH-SC : So you put it in your water when you wanrt to float?
DellaMarie : Walking out is a float that needs to be bigger than a brush stroke can provide so you over lap...I>E> walk out the float
pgf : *
DellaMarie : Yes it goes in the water. Never straight on the brush!
DellaMarie : Does that help?
CarolH-SC : you overlap?
DellaMarie : I mix mine in a cubby and call it my float shade water.
ViaVon : (a cubby is a sealable cup)
DellaMarie : Yes. Put down a stroke, then drop down and do another stroke etc as far as you need it to go.
CarolH-SC : yes...that explains the color float...overlap is???
CarolH-SC : Oh...now I understand/
DellaMarie : When I am doing a regular float I also overlap... Gives complete control of the stroke to you the floatee.
JANICET-NH : Thank you and good night.
CarolH-SC : thanx della
DellaMarie : Welcome!
ViaVon : Bonnie --you're next with your question!
MaryEllen-TX : *
BonnieG-KS : When I put more than 3 drops of Color Float per ounce water it seems like the water is "slippery." Is that the consistancy I want.
DellaMarie : It can feel that way. Yes.
ViaVon : *
DellaMarie : I do use 10 per oz.
DellaMarie : Von?
BonnieG-KS : Also, most painters that I know only use a 3 /4 inch brush. They say it makes the floats look softer. Do you agree with this?
DellaMarie : I believe that a bigger brush or a smaller brush can be soft if you know how to float properly.
DellaMarie : I like a small brush in small area and I do not have harsh floats!
DellaMarie : Dressing the brush correctly is of utmost importance.
BonnieG-KS : I have one more question. I hope that is okay. When you do a tornado float, say for a leaf, do you just keep floating just in a smaller section? Or, do you change to a darker color?
DellaMarie : Does that help?
BonnieG-KS : Yes, that helps a lot. Thank you!
DellaMarie : I don't understan the question....Sorry... try me again..
DellaMarie : Are you referring to the pyramid way of floating?
DellaMarie : If so, I am changing to a darker value ..yes.
DellaMarie : Or lighter...Depending on where it is going.
BonnieG-KS : When you do a tornado float for a leaf and you want the center to be darker where the vein is going to be placed, do just keep floating with the same color, but in a smaller and smaller amount? Or do you use a darker color near the center?
BonnieG-KS : Okay, you answered my question while I was typing. Thank you very much.
DellaMarie : Darker color. Sometimes you may not beed a darker color, a repeated float may be enough. Realloy depends on the look you want. I like strong contrast.
DellaMarie : need
DellaMarie : Therefore I usually am using a darker value each time.
DellaMarie : Welcome.
BonnieG-KS : I see. Thank you.
DellaMarie : Especially in corners.
DellaMarie : :D
ViaVon : Joanie P -- your question(s) are next!
JoanP-NS : Thank-you for your presentation Della. When I do small overlaping stokes , it shows where I've stopped/started. What am I doing wrong please?
DellaMarie : Perhaps you are stopping the float as opposed to really overlapping?
JoanP-NS : I mean when a float is long, say 10"
DellaMarie : When I do this it's like..stroke, stroke, stroke... no pausing.
DellaMarie : As soon as a float starts to "break", stop and reload your brush, over laping to continue.
JoanP-NS : maybe I am re-starting on the wrong angle maybe ?
DellaMarie : You can float a very long way smoothly by overlapping.
DellaMarie : Could be! Keep that brush laid on it's side.
JoanP-NS : I was doing the edges of Halloween cats, using black over charcoal and it was a mess
DellaMarie : I'm looking for words here. Much easier to show you all! LOL... Little overlappiong strokes. No big long strokes.
DellaMarie : I like to sing a little ...Ease on down the road...LOL
JoanP-NS : okay, I think I gotcha, mine were about 3 inches long
DellaMarie : Too long!
ViaVon : rotflol
JoanP-NS : okay, I'll try that and I'm sure it will help
Diane_FL : She even sang to me when she taught me LOL
DellaMarie : Let me know!
DellaMarie : Hehehe
ViaVon : PGF -- your inquiry is next :-)
pgf : Do you find color float necessary/helpful when used in very soft water? Would you use the same ratio...trial and error perhaps.
DellaMarie : I actually use color float to teach with. I am happy using plain old water as I float fairly quickly. Yes. You will have to test run your mix. I live in Florida. I think we get awamp water but I can't be sire.
DellaMarie : swamp
DellaMarie : VERY hard water.
Deb-QC : thx Della, Von and Dave, sorry have to run
pgf : Thanks, we have very hard water as well and use a softner. Thanks for the class. Very helpful!
DellaMarie : So I am sure that makes a difference.
ViaVon : Mary Ellen -- your question is next there!
DellaMarie : Thank you
pgf : Thanks, and good evening to all!
MaryEllen-TX : Would you please explain how to properly 'Dress' the brush for a float?
MaryEllen-TX : Please....
DellaMarie : OK... First stir that brush around in the water to "open" all the bristles. It is probably stiff from the last time you used it.
DellaMarie : Then hold a paper towel where you can see the bristles and touch the brush to the paper towel until the shine is gone.
DellaMarie : Then dip hte tip of the brush in your nice fresh paint. THEN work it by pushing it down to the ferrel back and forth in a small area.
DellaMarie : Now it should be ready to take to your piece.
MaryEllen-TX : do you stroke it back and forth in a small area as you are pushing it down to the ferrule?
DellaMarie : It is very important to "work" the brush. That allows the paint,, the water and the brush to do what they ae supposed to do together,
DellaMarie : Yes
MaryEllen-TX : Do you ever use Folk Art Floating Medium?
DellaMarie : I have tried most of them. I really do prefer straight water. Most of them keep my flopat wet too long for me.
Diane_FL : Can I comment on the FA Floating Medium Please
DellaMarie : Individual thing. Some people love floating wih products like that.
DellaMarie : Sure!
DellaMarie : Errr... When Von calls on you
lynnm : Very informatve session. I have to leave, but learned a lot and will check out your brushes. Thanks for the info.
ViaVon : lol -- Go ahead Diane :-)
Diane_FL : Della as an OSCI I know that FA can be put into water to float with but it's lots of water a good bit. So after a while I've gone now to Deco Art or Delta because of the difference in consistency.
MaryEllen-TX : Thank you, Della, that answers my question.
ViaVon : Della -- it's my turn **hurrah** I've got several questions for you!
Diane_FL : I like the idea of a few drops of medium in the 1 oz of water. Ratio makes more sense
DellaMarie : I think the speed with which we float matters as to what or if we need to add to our float water.
ViaVon : first off ... will Fini work as a colour float medium?
DellaMarie : Absolutely. However you do not do the paper towel thing. you drag it across the edge of the fini container.
DellaMarie : Feels different. Works fine.
DellaMarie : OK
ViaVon : Thank you -- since it is universally adaptable for all paint brands it makes sense to purchase one medium versus different mediums for different paints. :-) Next question --
ViaVon : When you are dipping into that watered colour float cup
DellaMarie : I agree.
ViaVon : doesn't the left-over paint on your brush pollute that water
ViaVon : and doesn't it get muddy?
BonnieG-KS : *
DellaMarie : I don't put my brush back into it with paint on it. I rinse, towel dry, then dress with Fini, float water etc.
DellaMarie : Small extra step.
ViaVon : aha! Ok ... that's a good rule of thumb then for me to follow too. Next question is with your comment to load that brush -- do you load the entire angle brush or just part of it?
DellaMarie : I actually nose dive my brush. LOL I put the angle tip into the paint, then work it.
ViaVon : YES -- that's what I thought!!! Your comment earlier made me wonder if I'd been doing it wrong. LOL
DellaMarie : The idea is to go from full color pain to clear water all on the same brush.
DellaMarie : paint
ViaVon : Thanks abunches Della! That answers my questions :-)
ViaVon : Bonnie --your question is next!
DellaMarie : Welcome
BonnieG-KS : What is Fini? Is that a faux glazing medium?
DellaMarie : Yes. Very versatile. Von has archives with info on it.
DellaMarie : I reccomend it for many uses/
DellaMarie : I never base coat without it.
BonnieG-KS : I'll have to check it out. Thanks!!
ViaVon : Bonnie -- it's is indeed a glazing medium that is universal to all paint brands. We have a seminar archive and product for you. :-)
ViaVon : Anyone else have any questions for DellaMarie?
BonnieG-KS : Base coat with it too? Sounds interesting.
MaryEllen-TX : FINI is GREAT, TOO! LOL WONDERFUL product!!! Thanks, VON!
ViaVon : Bonnie -- go to our seminar archives and read up on it and grab the product literature. It's an AWESOME product and hugely versatile!
DellaMarie : Come see me at BEE or HOOT. I'll demo all you need me to!
MaryEllen-TX : *
ViaVon : Mare -- go aheAD!
JoanP-NS : How I wish I could Della
BonnieG-KS : I wish I could go to BEE or Hoot, but can't.
MaryEllen-TX : Della Marie, When are you going to do A VIDEO?????? *drumroll*
DellaMarie : Me too! I want to teach everyone how to float shade.
BonnieG-KS : Yes, video?
ViaVon : *****applause***** for that question!
DellaMarie : err. When I learn how?
ViaVon : I've been fussing at her to do just thaT!
Diane_FL : Oh wait a minute folks
ViaVon : LOL Diane!
ViaVon : Diane is her technical advisor and consultant. *grIN*
DellaMarie : And more!
Diane_FL : We have located a software product that will allow us to reduce the huge file size we get now
MaryEllen-TX : Well, you NEED to in a BIG way!!!! There are NO videos out addressing this ONE subject and it would be a HUGE HIT!
Diane_FL : So very soon
ViaVon : I agree Mare!
DellaMarie : OK... Do you hear that Diane?
Diane_FL : On Della's website there will be a video of float shading
JoanP-NS : I second that request
ViaVon : Diane -- you keep working on it and Della -- you start getting prettified for it! LOL
DellaMarie : e are working on it. Really, really
ViaVon : GOOD !!
MaryEllen-TX : I THIRD that request!!!!!!!
ViaVon : We need you and your floating video!
DellaMarie : LOL
BonnieG-KS : Suggestion: When you make the video, demonstrate how to float "around" something. I have trouble with that.
Diane_FL : Yes we are working on it very soon on the webstie a little bit just to get her feet wet
DellaMarie : I sure will.
JoanP-NS : I have dial up, they on line videos are choppy, I would like the video more please
MaryEllen-TX : What an awesome DUO that would be!!! YOUR BRUSHES and a VIDEO together!!!!!! magic
ViaVon : Bonnie -- what do you mean "Float around" ??
DellaMarie : OK... I hear you lovely people!
ViaVon : Hold up a second gang ... I think we have a question here from Bonnie :-)
Diane_FL : Joan in due time video production can come , lets see Della only needs to sell 50,000 brushes then we can do that video
BonnieG-KS : Like to float around an object. For example: a circle to make is look round or stand out.
MaryEllen-TX : Seriously, Della, there is only ONE video I've run across (and I have a LOT) that addresses floating/shading and it is on a Perfect Palette..and you can't get them anymore!
ViaVon : oh ! You mean 3-D like for an apple or something?
DellaMarie : It requirs a tappering off when you start and stop the float...
BonnieG-KS : Yes.
ViaVon : Della, we discussed floating quite a bit but that was more in terms of shading ... not highlighting which comes into play with Bonnie's inquriy
DellaMarie : Otherwise you have to blunt ends and that sure doesn't look right!
DellaMarie : Well I think I hear both being asked.... You would put a dark shade on one area nd a hi light in another...Am I right?
ViaVon : yes -- and is the floating technique the same for both?
ViaVon : let's talk about an apple for example
Diane_FL : Good example
DellaMarie : No... the dark shading will be close to but not touching the edge..
ViaVon : **listening**
DellaMarie : the hilight will be circular and further away from the edge.
ViaVon : Does that make sense, Bonnie?
DellaMarie : The circular float is where I would use the extender. The other, or a cresent shaped float is a regular float you just have to taper the ends.
BonnieG-KS : Yes, but that is not exactly what I meant.
DellaMarie : OOPPS. ask again
ViaVon : can you rephrase the question for DellaMarie?
BonnieG-KS : Let's change to a triangle.
DellaMarie : OK
ViaVon : ROTFL OK!
BonnieG-KS : Say you want a triangle to appear as 3d instead of flat.
JoanP-NS : do you mean a shade around an object to rais
JoanP-NS : ooops
ViaVon : from triangle to pyramid
BonnieG-KS : When you shade, don't you have to shade both the inside and outside of the triangle?
DellaMarie : Are you asking about a cast shadow?
BonnieG-KS : Yes, to a pyramid.
BonnieG-KS : I guess it would be called a cast shadow.
DellaMarie : Ok.... Same rules applies... A shadow not guite on the edge...A shadow laying on the suface away from it starts at the edge. A cast shadow always touchs.
DellaMarie : Shading the pyramid itself and a cast shadow are different.
BonnieG-KS : Say you want to "raise" up a triangle as Joan P suggested. How would you do that?
DellaMarie : And it is important that the cast shadow mimic the actually shape of the object.
JoanP-NS : Bonnie, do you mean to bring it forward as in away from the background?
BonnieG-KS : Yes.
DellaMarie : Deepen and darken the sahding around it.
ViaVon : oooh I do that all the time!
DellaMarie : The darker the shading the more it comes foward.
ViaVon : Bonnie -- you're shading the background behind the triangle, pyramid instead of the pyramid itself
BonnieG-KS : Getting around the corners without making it look choppy is a problem.
ViaVon : yes i agree
ViaVon : i struggle too
JoanP-NS : me too
Dave : like a pyramid vrs a cone
DellaMarie : You re basically doing a walk out that is crooked.
DellaMarie : Oh... I need that vidio.
ViaVon : the tornado walk out then?
DellaMarie : LOL
ViaVon : I agree with that DellaMarie! lol
DellaMarie : Picture the front and one side of the pyamid... Now you would start the float on the front edge and continue it around the side.
ViaVon : Della the other thing I wanted to ask is if the paint is lifting ... does that mean that the previous paint layer needs to dry longer?
DellaMarie : Then you would repeat in the walking out method to lengthen it.
DellaMarie : YES. Lifting is always becasues the under layer is not dry enough. I live with a dryer handy
ViaVon : good advice :-)
DellaMarie : Have I answer the pyramid question?
ViaVon : Bonnie -- did that help you?
BonnieG-KS : Yes. Thank you. Remember to show it on the video!!!!! Grin.
DellaMarie : Will do!
ViaVon : *giggling here*
ViaVon : Does anyone else have any questions for Della?
Jayne_F-Oh : *no question, just wanted to say hi to one of my favorite Florida artist from the Ohio one with the fall leaves cd
DellaMarie : HI JAYNE!!!!
JoanP-NS : May I ask who makes your brush Della
DellaMarie : Dove brushes makes them. It is a Midnight dove angle and acamel hair blend mop.
ViaVon : Lovely lovely lovely brushes!
JoanP-NS : very good brushes
DellaMarie : Ohhhh. Thank you. I am proud of them.
DebT-AR : What booth will you be in at the BEE?
MaryEllen-TX : *************Wonderful SET of BRUSHES***************they come in THREE sizes!!!!!!
JoanP-NS : would they maybe be interested in sponsoring the video to go with the brush as a pkg deal maybe
DellaMarie : I will be in the Craqft Center booth at BEE.
DellaMarie : Craft.
ViaVon : Do you have a booth #?
DellaMarie : Hmmm. I don't know about that. You see Dove does not sell my brushes. Only I do. Von gets them from me for you.
DellaMarie : Not that I know. LOL... I'll be easy enough to find. I'll hve a big red scooter somewhere close.
JoanP-NS : okay thanks, I just tossed it out as a thought
ViaVon : Yes, I feel it is important to get the word out about these! :-)
DellaMarie : Good thought.
ViaVon : Well I think we can open up the floor for general fun and mayhem! ENJOY And THANK YOU DELLA MARIE for a wonderful seminar!!
ViaVon : *applause*
Dave : woohoo
Diane_FL : Thank you Della
MaryEllen-TX : *applause*
JoanP-NS : *applause*
DellaMarie : Thank you for having me Von
DebT-AR : *applause*
Dave : It's playtime!!!!
SharronL-CA : *applause*
BonnieG-KS : Wonderful class.
ViaVon : Our pleasure Della MariE!
MaryEllen-TX : Playtime...US PLAY???? heehee
DebT-AR : very informative!
DellaMarie : Thanks to all of you for stopping by.
ViaVon : Your Floating Worksheet is truly wonderful Della!
DeeF : Thank you for a very good class
MaryEllen-TX : Thank you for a WONDERFUL seminar, Della!
ViaVon : Thank you so much for doing that for us ... helps a lot!
JoanP-NS : I want to thank you Della and Von and Dave for the seminar and for the worksheet - that is great!!
DellaMarie : Glad to be of service.
DeeF : Night all
ViaVon : I have NEVER EVER read anywhere to lay my brush on it's side for floating until you told me to, Della
MaryEllen-TX : and thank you VON and DAVID for having US!!!!
DellaMarie : I really, really want everyone to know how to float shade.
ViaVon : Our pleasure !
MaryEllen-TX : night, Dee!
JoanP-NS : its essential to good painting
ViaVon : Night Dee!
DellaMarie : Von it makes a huge difference. ALL the bristles need to touch the surface on their side all at the same time.
AnnL-CAN : I'll start practicing right away, thanks so much
ViaVon : I'll bet Bonnie is excited to try floating again, like I am! LOL
BonnieG-KS : Yes!
ViaVon : Della -- yes, it makes a world of sense to me!
KerryS-Ca : I came in late(sorry) is it possible to read about tonights class some where?
DellaMarie : Go to it ladies!!!
DellaMarie : Von...
BonnieG-KS : I'm excited to float and try that Fini you were mentioning.
ViaVon : Kerry -- it'll be in the archives at the latest by saturday
BonnieG-KS : Good night everyone.
KerryS-Ca : Thank you
Diane_FL : Bonnie sometimes Fini just makes floating possible. I know you'll love using it
MaryEllen-TX : Night, Bonnie!
ViaVon : Kerry -- when you go to the class room, you'll see the Seminar Archives link and it'll be linked there
KerryS-Ca : I will look for it,Thanks
MaryEllen-TX : I've learned sooo many helpful things since finding Von and David!
DellaMarie : I'll name my video... Floating can be fun! LOL
JoanP-NS : I can see that I need to add your brush to my wish list Della
ViaVon : Let me know if you don't find it -- send an email and I'll get you connected
DellaMarie : Yeppers.
DellaMarie : It really does make it so much easier to have that mop right there.
ViaVon : I agree with that!
ViaVon : I'm all thumbs otherwiSE! lol
JoanP-NS : I use mops .... sometimes, when I'm on a roll I can get by without them
DellaMarie : Hey.... Put a SET on your wish list. *drumroll*
JoanP-NS : some days I can't float worth you know what
ViaVon : OHhhhhhhhhhh did you share that tip to use a bit of rubbing alcohol to clean brush if needed quickly?
Diane_FL : On a floating Roll? I'm still waiting for that day
MaryEllen-TX : I AVOIDED floating at ALL costs til I was introduced to Della's Brushes!!!!
*drumroll*
DellaMarie : Nope. I keep my mop cleaned with alcohol. Evaporates quickly and you can keep on working.
ViaVon : I did that -- it worked! lol
ViaVon : GREAT tip !!
MaryEllen-TX : I use Baby Wipes with alcohol to clean mine...works great!
DebT-AR : straight alcohol?
DellaMarie : Never put that mop in water. you will grow old waiting for it to dry again.
JoanP-NS : I didn't know that one, very pleased here
ViaVon : mine gets cleaned only at the end of the painting session
DellaMarie : Yep. 91 percent is best.
DellaMarie : Evaporates the fastest.
ViaVon : welcome back Jayne1
MaryEllen-TX : Della, can you clean it in SCOTCH????? *applause*
ViaVon : rotfl
KerryS-Ca : Just the MOP brush for cleaning or any brush?
DellaMarie : Hmmm. Good question... No answer. ROFLMAO
MaryEllen-TX : well you SAID NINETY ONE PROOF, didn't you???? *beep*
debbiejo : drink the scotch, then you won't care if the brush is clean OR dry
DellaMarie : LOL
JoanP-NS : lol
MaryEllen-TX : true, how very true!
KerryS-Ca : with the Aclcohlo?
DellaMarie : I use Simple green to clean the other end
ViaVon : what's simple green?

Diane_FL : Oh Joan that must be the " on a roll " you were talking about LOL
ViaVon : I have to share my brush cleaning secret -- it's emu oil soap! We carry a line of it and it puts a wonderful oil treatment on your brush at the end of the cleaning session that keeps them so nice and refurbished.
MaryEllen-TX : Well, if I drank, I would, Joan, but that's probably very true!! LOL
JoanP-NS : lol, I don't drink at all .... used to once upon a time
DellaMarie : Oh... Did I tell you about the wiggle?
JoanP-NS : now I prefer little bottles
ViaVon : what's the wiggle?
JoanP-NS : with pretty colors in em
MaryEllen-TX : aw *%#@....I feel another ORDER building!!!! ROFL
Diane_FL : Emu Oil and what part of the emu doesn't that oil come from Von
ViaVon : Diane -- pardon?
MaryEllen-TX : Emu oil comes in CoLORS???
DellaMarie : You take your brush with brush cleaner in it... you hold the tips of the bristles and then you "wiggle" the bristles. Pulls the paint out of the ferrel.
Diane_FL : Emu Oil tell us about that I don't know of it
ViaVon : Not my emu oil! ROTFL one little .07 ounce bar and it's lovely
Dave : Trying to catch an angry Emu ain't easy, let me tell you!
DellaMarie : LOL
ViaVon : Diane -- it's made from Emu Oil! lol
MaryEllen-TX : looking out the window to see if my EMU crop is out there!!!

MaryEllen-TX : DAVE, HONEY!!!!!!!!
JoanP-NS : How long have you been painting and teaching Della
Dave : MaryEllen
DellaMarie : Over ten years.
Diane_FL : Von is the soap a new discovery for brushes or is it a product used for something else found by painters
MaryEllen-TX : You mean VON let you type???? LOL
ViaVon : Diane -- both. The company also makes a hand softener and arthritis emollient
Dave : She was busy so I got away
Diane_FL : Thanks Von
ViaVon : you're welcome :-)
MaryEllen-TX : Can I answer the emu oil question, too?
ViaVon : sure!
DebT-AR : Von--will you be at BEE with Final Coat & Fini & Emu soap?
ViaVon : my girlfriend, Peni Powell uses Murphy's Oil Soap to clean her brushes. My Emu Oil soap is very similar to that but leaves a cleaner and softer feel -- better smelling too
MaryEllen-TX : In the EARLY SEVENTIES they 'discovered' emu oil...they made everything from 'cosmetics' to 'vitamin pills' from it and it was going to be the 'next' cattle industry...
ViaVon : Deb -- no, sorry -- but it's here at our E-Shoppe for you! :-)
Jayne_F-Oh : guess I better say good night,it was very interesting. Until my computer fainted and I lost a bunch,
ViaVon : HI Barbara!

ViaVon : Thank you for coming, Jayne!
Jayne_F-Oh : thanks a bunch , I will print it out
Dave : Welcome, Barbara
MaryEllen-TX : However, there are still some VERY good products out there with EMU oil in them ...and the soap Von is talking about is one of them!
ViaVon : I won't use anything else for my brushes ... it conditions them so beautifully
ViaVon : now i just lied
ViaVon : sorry
ViaVon : I also use
ViaVon : Mona Lisa pink soap for dried on stuff
BarbaraH-PA : Hello. This is my first visit so I'll sit in my little corner and see what is going on.
Diane_FL : Your moment for fame Von and you blew it LOL
ViaVon : when a brush got missed or something ... the mona lisa pink comes out
