Basic Instructions:

  1. Prepare your piece by sanding the bare wood with the #200 grit sandpaper, removing any burrs or bits and rough edges.  Remove the dust with your tack cloth.

  2. Using your pattern line drawing, tracing paper and pencil or stylus trace both the upper and the lower lines of the angled "Welcome" banner's section onto your wood piece.

  3. Prepare a mix of Delta's All Purpose Sealer + Silver Pine.  The ratio is 1:1 (i.e., one part sealer to one part paint).  You can use your palette knife or a craft stick or a tooth pick to mix the sealer and paint together.

  4. Using your #3/4" Flat brush, seal your wood with the sealer+paint mix you made in Step #3, painting above and below the Welcome Banner's section.

  5. Prepare a small mix of Delta's All Purpose Sealer + Touch of Pink.  The ratio is 1:1 (one part sealer to one part paint).  Again, use your palette knife or a craft stick or a tooth pick to mix the sealer and paint together.

  6. Using your 3/4" Flat brush, seal only the Welcome Banner section with the mix you made in Step #5.

  7. Sand gently with #600 grit sand paper and remove any dust with your tack cloth.

  8. IF your piece looks like it should have one more coat of either color (Do you see wood showing through it ? Does it look a bit streaked or something?  -- that's your clue!) THEN, using your #3/4" Flat Brush, give your piece one more coat of just the acrylic paint alone ... i.e., either just the Silver Pine or just the Lisa Pink ... not the sealer+paint mix.

  9. You will use your # 1/4" Angle Brush for:   base-coloring and shading the flowers and leaves;   for shading the bottom of the Welcome Banner; for shading underneath the Welcome Banner and under the flowers and leaves.

  10. You will use your # 1/8" Angle Brush for highlighting the flower petals and leaves as well as deeper shading of the interiors of the daffodils and the recesses between the flower petals.

  11. You will use your # 1 Round for the Welcome Letters and stems as well as for highlighting on the flowers and leaves.

  12. Take a few moments along the way as needed to allow your piece to dry before moving on to the next step.  Refer to the photo enlargement for visual assistance with any of the painting details that may be confusing to you.  Oftentimes, just looking at that "thing" will help you get a full understanding of the written instructions.  :-)

Let's Begin!

  1. Lay the tracing paper and pattern on the wood piece.  With your pencil, copy the pattern's outlines to transfer it to your wood piece.  Don't forget to line up your Welcome Banner section.

  2. With Dark Victorian Teal and your 1/4" Angle brush, shade with a float of paint to make all of the shadows under and around the banner, the leaves and flowers.

  3. With Lisa Pink and your 1/4" Angle brush, shade with a light float of paint along the inside bottom and half-way up the sides of the "welcome banner".

  4. With Lisa Pink and your 1/8" Angle brush, shade with a light float of paint under the "Welcome" text.

  5. With Dark Victorian Teal and your #1" Round brush, paint the "Welcome" text.

  6. With your 1/4" Angle brush and Deep River Green base paint all of the leaves

  7. With your 1" Round and Deep River Green, base paint the stems.

  8. With your 1/4" Angle brush and Sunbright Yellow base paint all the daffodils.

  9. With your 1/8" Angle brush and Black Green, lightly shade with a float of paint along the lower halves (bottoms) of the leaves and where the leaf touches a stem.  Also lightly float a shade along the outer edges and bottoms of the stems.

  10. With your 1/4" Angle brush and Butter Yellow, lightly shade a float of paint along the lower halves and interior areas of the daffodil petals where they meet the daffodil's center cup.

  11. With your 1/8" Angle Brush and Antique Gold, shade a thin line float of paint at the daffodil petal interiors and on petals which are overlapped by others.

  12. With your 1/8" Angle Brush and Dark Burnt Umber, shade a thin line float of paint along the daffodils' cup centers and make two short float lines into the side of the daffodil cups.

  13. With your #1 Round Brush and Custard, lightly shade a float of paint along the daffodil petals top halves and the centers of the daffodil cups and along the top outer rim of the daffodil cups to create highlights.

  14. With your #1 Round Angle Brush and Silver Pine, lightly shade with floats of paint along the outer edges of leaves and center of stems to create highlights.

  15. Sign your work!

When your piece is thoroughly dry, erase any visible tracing lines remaining.

Then, protect and finish your piece with several coats of Final Coat, following the instructions provided on the bottle's label.
